Nancy Kalembe Postpones Campaign as 2021 Virtual Bid to Unseat Museveni Kicks Off

0
Nancy Kalembe

Independent presidential candidate, Nancy Kalembe who was slated to launch her campaign today in Jinja City in eastern Uganda has postponed due to what she described as “unavoidable circumstances.”

Kalembe said this today after delivering her letter to Jinja Police Station notifying them of her intention to use Kakindu Stadium later this week.

The Electoral Commission yesterday released a campaign schedule for presidential candidates showing where each will start today.

However, Alliance for National Transformation’s (ANT) Mugisha Muntu and Democratic Party (DP) candidate Nobert Mao are not on the EC campaign schedule after they reportedly failed to submit their comprehensive campaign plans to EC in time.

Paul Bukenya, the acting EC spokesperson, warned yesterday that only candidates whose timetables have been approved are allowed to start canvassing for votes today.
President Museveni, seeking reelection on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket to stretch his lead of the country to 40 years, is set to begin his campaign in Luweero District today and travel to Lira tomorrow.

According to the EC schedule, Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, alias Bobi Wine, of the National Unity Platform (NUP), will be in Pakwach, Nebbi and Arua districts today.  He will be in Kitgum, Pader and Gulu districts the following day.
However, Bobi Wine said he will delay his campaign by a day and start tomorrow because the EC sent him the schedule late yesterday.

According to EC guidelines, the candidates are advised to hold virtual campaigns to avoid physical contact amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Bobi Wine Nominated Amidst Chaos

Kyagulanyi Nominated

The National Unity Platform party presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine has been duly nominated by the independent electoral commission to vie for the 2021 presidential election.

Also known as Bobi Wine, Kyagulanyi who is aged 38 years has been confirmed to vie for presidential elections against incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who has ruled the country since 1986.

Kyagulanyi has encountered one of the most chaotic moments of his budding political career that started with participation in the Kyadondo by-election three years ago. The nomination has come amidst stringent restrictions against gatherings as government claimed they were enforcing Ministry of Health’s precautionary measures on the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

The first day of his nomination has also been not a normal political day with the security forces using teargas against his supporters all the way from Magere to Kyambogo University where the Electoral Commission has been waiting to receive him.

Kyagulanyi has been nominated on the tail end of the nomination day.  He was in company of his wife Barbie Ithungo and an entourage of NUP leaders.

Gen Henry Tumukunde Nominated for Presidency

General Henry Tumukunde

After almost an hour of delay over anomalies in his documents, former security minister, Gen Henry Tumukunde was Monday finally nominated as a presidential candidate for 2021 general election.

“There is an anomaly in the aspirant (Gen Tumukunde)’s documents, we have advised him to rectify. Fortunately he came right before time and still has one hour,” the EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said Monday, moments after Tumukunde arrived for nomination.

Gen Tumukunde was then sent to the Commissioner for Oaths before he was duly nominated.

At about 2:20pm, Gen Tumukunde returned to the nomination centre at Kyambogo sports ground after sorting out the anomaly that was earlier pointed out by the EC boss.

“I, Simon Byabakama as the returning officer for this exercise, duly nominate Tumukunde Henry Kakurugu, as a candidate for presidency in the 2021 general election…” Justice Byabakama said.

After nomination, Gen Tumukunde who was Mr Museveni’s bush war comrade said it was time for Uganda to change leadership.

“The time has come. It is not tomorrow but now,” he said.

He pledged to improve on peace and economic growth and development when he becomes President after 2021 general election.

“No country in the world with 45 million people would depend on 600mw of electricity”, Gen Tumukunde said.

Gen Tumukunde hopes to unseat President Museveni who has ruled Uganda since 1986.

He will be contesting as an independent candidate under his ‘Renewed Uganda’ platform that he inveigled in August this year.

Meanwhile, aspiring independent candidate, John Katumba’s nomination was deferred after failing to produce proof of payment of the Shs20m required nomination fee.

“Because you have no proof of payment of the Ushs 20m fee, we can’t proceed to have you nominated,” Justice Byabakama said.

Mr Katumba had earlier told journalists that his agenda was to liberate Uganda psychologically, socially, economically and politically.

Revealed: Why Ronald Mayinja crossed to NRM

0
Ronald Mayinja

Recently musician Ronald Mayinja who had wanted to contest for MP in Gomba made a U-turn and rejoined NRM days after he had announced that he had returned to National Untity Platform led presidential hopeful Bobi Wine.

Mayinja unveiled a song showering praises onto President Yoweri Museveni who leads the NRM.

He then posted on his social media platforms saying he will vote for Mr Museveni up to 2040.
To many, Mayinja’s moves did not come a surprise given that several artists and influential people have of recent been seen abandoning the Kyadondo East MP’s struggle to join the NRM.

According to Mayinja, he crossed back to NRM which he had abandoned because he was fed up of insults from Bobi Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi’s supporters.
“I have been seeing some of those people (NUP) insult me while others called me an NRM mole. I was hurt. No one in NRM insulted me. For how long shall we live in fear. Some had threatened to hurl bottles at me. So does it mean that if farmer, a businessman or any other businessman does not support your struggle you burn their business? I decided not to be part of that group because of their thinking,” he said.

According to Mayinja, there’s nothing much he will contribute to NRM.
“President Museveni or NRM can do without me. I don’t sleep in State House and don’t intend to. I joined NRM to help change this country,” he added.

About Museveni’s campaign song, Mayinja declined to reveal how much he bagged for it.
” I can’t tell you how much I was given but just know I’m a businessman. If I tell you how much I was given, I’ll be giving my potential clients reasons to over bargain,” he added.
In the song, Mayinja compares Museveni to former presidents Milton Obote and Idi Amin. He says Museveni is far better than the two.

He says president Museveni, 76, is the only man with a vision, among others.
However, the NRM secretary general Justine Kasule Lumumba said they did not pay Mayinja for the song.

“That was his gift to the president when he announced he had joined us. We did not pay him and there’s nothing to show that he was paid,” Lumumba said.

He has been at loggerheads with several pastors including Pastor Jackson Ssenyonga of Life Ministries at Bwaise who claims that Yiga was a false prophet!

PYIP Denounces Attack on NUP Offices

0
Platform for Youth

The Platform for Youth Inclusion in Politics representatives on Friday this week condemned the unfair political environment especially the Wednesday Police and Military siege on the National Unity Platform Offices based in Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb that led to loss of approximately Shs25 million, leaving many injured,  damage of property, confiscation of nomination signatures , unnecessary arrests of close to 100 NUP members including tailors and merchants of all NUP wear as security officials claimed it’s a breach of Security wear and patents.

The raid came just a day prior to National Unity Platform primaries that were scheduled to occur on Thursday 15th October across the Country.

The Platform for Youth Inclusion in Politics (PYIP) condemned the mysterious act of invasion by security officials and requested government to set pace for dialogue and discussion with the different political parties in Uganda instead of suffocating the opposition yet the constitution and the laws of Uganda clearly recognizes their existence.

The Platform for Youth Inclusion during a press brief held on Friday October 16th at their Offices in Kasanga, a Kampala suburb pledged to collaborate with different legal service providers and see NUP detainees attain justice and freedom including partnership with Human rights activists.

The attack on NUP Offices comes at a time Uganda’s Political field is getting to the climax with elections and nominations for the different political party candidates ongoing across the Country. PYIP mentioned of unveiling a tracker that will closely monitor electoral progress and status in the Country especially when Presidential elections are just few months ahead.

The Organization (PYIP) prompted by the provoke on NUP office stepped in with several interventions consisting; Call to Action, Humble request to Security officials for civilized ways of peaceful elections, Advised the Electoral Commission to well manage election activities without bias, Call upon young Ugandans to denounce election violence, called on the international community to publicly speak out to Ugandan government to respect regional and international legal instruments governing human rights and freedoms.

Emmanuel Wabwire, an official at The Platform for Youth Inclusion in Politics during the presser criticized the NUP Office attack claiming it’s a breach of freedom of expression and limitation for citizen participation in politics as he promised to work with all partners such as; Action Aid Uganda, Open Space Centre, Advance Africa Foundation, Youth Coalition for Electoral Democracy, among others to petition Government for a fair Political Environment especially during these political times.
