NRM Spends Billions on ‘Buying Fake NUP Members’

NUP Membership Card

In the last few days, hundreds of people said to be members of the National Unity Platform led by presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi have reportedly defected to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) led by president Yoweri Museveni.

Like it has always been a ritual in every election year, the said NUP members were presented before the media before they denounced Uganda’s youngest political vehicle.

President Museveni’s spokesperson on Thursday (December 17) said NUP Northern Uganda registrar, Rackara Robinson and 60 other members had crossed to NRM in Aswa, Gulu.

“They fault NUP for preaching hate, pushing for violence and ideological bankruptcy! Defectors include 11 sub-county coordinators,” Mr Wanyama said.

On December 16, 2020, Mr Wanyama said 245 NUP supporters in Lango had crossed to NRM.

“They include MP flag-bearers for Lira City East (Calvin Ojuka), Kwania North (Bobson Chwa), Dennis Owiny, dep. regional chief, five councilor and six LC5 aspirants,” he said.

However, during interviews for this story, we discovered that some people who were reported to have defected had either been already dismissed from NUP for, among others, embezzling party funds or had never been members of the party as they did not have membership cards.

NUP officials said there was no such position as NUP Northern Uganda registrar and neither did they have anyone called Rachkara as one of their northern Uganda leaders.

“What we have is NUP Regional Liaison Officer for Northern Uganda,” an official who never wanted to be named because he’s not the official spokesperson of the party, said.

Shs200m stake for each NUP member

Earlier, the Kyadondo East MP popularly known as Bobi Wine had accused NRM leaders of approaching NUP members, including flag bearers with as much as Shs200 millions of tax payers’ money.

“While patients in our hospitals die because there is no oxygen, the NRM has approached almost all NUP candidates offering them hundreds of millions to quit the race! Some are offered up to Shs200m, others more, others less! Some have fallen into the trap. Many have rejected the dictator’s maneuvers. This is what our money does! This is why we must remove the dictator!,” Bobi Wine said in a statement posted on his social media pages on Tuesday (December 15).

NUP fight for NRM money

Just hours after his statement, there was drama in Lira City on Wednesday as two people said to be former NUP members clashed bitterly over cash handouts from NRM leaders.

Tonny Olanya Olenge, the former head of mobilization for NUP in Northern Uganda who defected to the NRM early this week came under fire Bosco Ocira Lawino alias Snoop, the former NUP head of mobilization for Nwoya district who also defected to NRM last week.

Ocira is part of the team that raided NUP’s Northern regional office in Gulu. Olenge was equally accused of masterminding the attack.  The two were all in Lira City to witness the defection of 150 NUP party leaders and members from Lango Sub Region to NRM party and preach the good gospel to the defectors.

However, hell broke loose when Ocira requested Olenge for his facilitation money for mobilization for the daylong event but Olenge turned down his demands. He instead asked him whether he wants to travel back to Gulu City.

Olenge had earlier received Shs1 million from Bosco Odoch Olak, the Head of the NRM campaigns in Northern Uganda for the 2021 general elections. He was expected to share the money with two other colleagues who were part of the advance team for the mobilization.

After failing to get the money, Ocira furiously told Olenge that he was expelled from the NUP after embezzling Shs 8 million meant for the party activities. He directed Olenge to give him his money or else risk facing his fists.

Ocira told Olenge that he is an opium smoker who doesn’t fear anything as he charged towards him. However, Olenge shot back accusing Ocira of being useless, saying that he is not afraid of him.

The two nearly exchanged blows prompting two soldiers, police officer and a private bodyguard to Bosco Odoch Olak to intervene and separate them.

NRM dismisses the claims

However, NRM director communications, Emmanuel Dombo refuted claims of ‘buying’ NUP members as false.

“That’s not true. You have also seen some NRM members who crossed to NUP; were they also paid (by NUP)? NRM has internal mechanisms on how to run the campaign. We are going to campaign door to door, media to media, and all other legal forms. The opposition is laying a foundation for excuses for their loss come 2021,” Mr Dombo said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Dombo had attended an event where over 250 youths said to be members of NUP defected to NRM at Kachonga Village, Naweyo Sub County in Butaleja District.

NRM youth defect to NUP

In august this year, 148 youth wearing National Resistance Movement (NRM) T-shirts joined NUP citing frustration from the party leadership they had served for the last 10 years.
The group, led by Mr Mahad Kasozi, alias Matugga, said they are part of the 334 NRM supporters that had joined NUP after they failed to get help from NRM leaders yet they used their own resources to drum support for President Museveni in past elections.
The NRM deputy Secretary General, Mr Richard Todwong, accused Mr Matugga of not following up with the secretariat to fulfill the promises.
“I remember they organised their own thing and invited me. But I have never seen or heard from them again and this is the first time they are complaining through you. None of them came to my office to get these things that I had promised,” Mr Todwong said then.

“Some of these programmes of mobilisation are allocated under the State House budget and it is unfair that they have not yet received the money or any kind of support because we were told that this money was released,” Mr Todwong added.

President Museveni is seeking to extend his rule to the fourth decade in next month’s general election.

His biggest challenger, bobi wine was four when Mr Museveni came to power in 1986 following a five-year guerrilla.

Uganda’s constitution has been amended twice, in 2006 and 2018, to remove the term and age limits – potentially allowing Museveni to be president for life.

Bobi Wine’s concerts were banned and public rallies routinely broken up with tear gas, and Wine himself is frequently arrested.

His catchy pop songs about social justice, poverty and corruption have shaken the ruling party and its ageing patriarch Museveni, who at 76 is the only president most Ugandans have ever known.

Uganda’s Newest Baby Rhinoceros Named Rae Ruparelia

0

Uganda’s newest baby rhinoceros at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has been named Rae Ruparelia.

The naming ceremony took place at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola district where the sturdy calf was born last Saturday, bringing the population at the sanctuary to 34 rhinos

The 7-year-old mother rhino, Uhuru is already showing signs of good mothering, according to the statement from Rhino Fund Uganda.

“Mother and baby are doing well and need to rest after their exciting night,” said a statement by Rhino Fund Uganda.
The naming ceremony was carried out by Ruparelia Foundation on Thursday.

The name was decided by Rajiv Ruparelia and wife Rae Naiya as one of the conservation strategy.

“Rae Ruparelia” is the name given to the new born rhino at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola. I was joined with my lovely wife, Naiya Ruparelia to witness the naming on behalf of Ruparelia Foundation,” Rajiv said.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, at the beginning of the 20th century, 500,000 rhinos roamed Africa and Asia. By 1970, rhino numbers dropped to 70,000, and today, around 27,000 rhinos remain in the wild. Very few rhinos survive outside national parks and reserves due to persistent poaching and habitat loss over many decades.
Three species of rhino—black, Javan, and Sumatran—are critically endangered.

Located 176km (100 miles) north of Kampala on the Gulu highway towards Murchison Falls (branch off at Nakitoma Trading centre) Ziwa is the home of the only wild rhinos in Uganda.

Presently the sanctuary is home to 22 southern white rhinos. The sanctuary has become increasingly popular with tourists; for Rhino Trekking, Shoebill Trek and Canoe Ride, Bird Watching, Night Walk, Nature Walk and Relaxation.

Ruparelia Foundation to Name New Rhino Calf

0

Rhino Fund Uganda today received a new rhino calf. Its mother is called Uhuru.

This birth took place at Uganda’s Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola District. It brings the rhino population at the sanctuary to 34.

“The calves mother is Uhuru and the calf is yet to be named by Ruparelia foundation,” reads s statement from the foundation.

Resulting from the increased tourism marketing efforts, infrastructure developments as well as conservation of Uganda’s heritage, visits to national parks have increased from 196,768 in 2014 to 332,197 tourists in 2018.

“Resultantly, revenue generation has increased from Shs42b in 2014 to Shs124b in 2018.

Additionally, the tourism foreign exchange earnings have expanded from US$834m in 2012 to US$1.6b in 2018/19, making tourism the highest foreign exchange earner,” president Yoweri Museveni said.

In this elapsing term (2016-2021), NRM government focused on recovery of wildlife populations and development. This was done through controlling poaching and illegal wildlife trade, management of invasive species, conservation education and awareness as well as human wildlife conflicts mitigation, according to president Museveni.

EC Summons Kyagulanyi and Amuriat Over Mass Rallies

Kyagulanyi Campaign

The Electoral Commission (EC) has summoned National Unity Platform’s presidential candidate Ssentamu Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) and  Forum for Democratic Change’s (FDC’s) Patrick Amuriat Obol over repeated breach of electoral guidelines and Covid -19 SOPS.

The two have continued to have mass processions and rallies on the campaign trail and put the lives of Ugandans in jeopardy through the likely spread of the Corona Virus.   There has been a spike in Corona virus spread in Uganda with over 30,000 cases and many new infections.

The two presidential candidates are required to appear before EC on Monday (December 14, 2020) at 11am to defend themselves and also forge a way forward.

“Inspite of what the commission communicated in the stated press communications on the matter, you have continued to ignore and /or neglected observing the standard operating procedures by holding mass rallies and processions, contrary to established guidelines thereby risking the lives of the people. In the process this has resulted into unwarranted occasional confrontations with security personnel,” Justice Byabakama said in a letter dated December 10, 2020.

Mr. Kyagulanyi is accused of holding rallies Iganga on November 17, 2020 and Koboko on December 8, 2020, while Amuriat on the other hand is accused of holding mass rallies in Mbarara on November 17 and 18, 2020 among other areas and also holding processions en route to his campaign venues.

Rwanda’s Attractions Beyond Gorillas

0

Though gorilla tourism has been a focus for tourism in Rwanda for the past decades fetching in thousands of travelers, a need for diversification has been appreciated. Currently, there are only six choices from which travelers can decide on what to take part in while in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda. These include mountain gorillas being most favored in volcanoes national park, canopy walk in Nyungwe forest national park, lake kivu, bird watching, and galleries or else national and game parks all over the country.

In this land of a thousand hills, gorilla trekking being the foremost, a permit costs $1500 making it a cash cow that has driven increased revenue from the tourism sector for the government. For non East Africans, purchasing a gorilla permit seems expensive but agreements that are value prevalence make it reasonable for travelers from all over the world.

There is high demand for the mountain gorilla permits in Rwanda in that its rare to find a weekend not overbooked despite the high costs (1500USD). This indicates that travelers surely enjoy trekking.

However though memorable, mountain gorilla tracking entails hiking up and down the jungle, which can even take a whole day. The activity is so interesting but very tiresome in that by the end of the trek, no single traveler wishes to go back. As a result, most travelers both international and Rwanda residents have not trekked the mountain gorillas more than once.

More still, for one to enjoy most attractions in Rwanda, he/she has to travel from the capital Kigali to remote areas for example the mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park. This make it quite difficult travelling to the park hence not done by travelers with limited time.

After the RDB analyzed tourism products in the world’s foremost tourism destinations, France, United States, Spain and china, it really realized a need to add new products. It realized that a traveler could come to Rwanda and fail to get a package he/she is interested in apart from the already existing ones. After looking at the tourism products menu for Rwanda Development Board. There is still a miss for some products, which are offered in the tourism leading destinations.

The observations and research done show that a number of tourism attractions in US, France, china and Spain are located in the city. This has raised the appetite for internationals to visit the cities of shanghai, Paris, New York, Beijing and Madrid. After stepping in any of these cities, its obvious that you can realize the reason why most people travel there. More still, the eye catching sites, greatly leisure parks and shopping stores in these cities make it obvious for every traveler to love their stay wishing to visit again as soon as possible.

Most importantly, it is believed that Kigali could find a golden opportunity in what these leading cities do not have. The best example here is the great weather in Rwanda, which is so unique compared to winter in these great cites. The favorable weather is a natural gift that African countries are blessed with but few in not all have put in any effort to package it as a tourism product. Once winter begins, most people in U.S.A, Europe and Asia particularly the elderly find it hard to stay in their countries hence running up to warmer places probably Africa which is a great opportunity for any African country.

Because of the good weather, there have been evidences that all travelers who have visited Rwanda have fallen in love with her great weather. There is ever a natural equalizer that balances warmth and coolness in Kigali, making it conducive to stay in the city all year round. This means that once in Rwanda, whether rainy, or sunny, the season does not matter which make it a paradise.

Alternatively still, Putting up Bandas in Kigali would also be a good idea if at all a couple of them could be loaned in the city. These Banda’s have currently become unique attractions in these leading cities hence would work for Rwanda too.

In conclusion therefore, Rwanda has a great potential for tourism, The Rwanda development board should therefore develop holiday resorts, leisure parks, ease local managerial principles, include locals in city planning, relieve city movement, endorse theater industry and uphold present safety for tourism.

I Don’t Regret Endorsing NRM’s Charles Ayume

0
Kyagulanyi

National Unity Platform President Kyagulanyi Robert Ssentamu  Bobi Wine has revealed the reason why he is endorsing people who are not in his NUP Party.

Yesterday while he was campaigning in Koboko Kyagulanyi endorsed National Resistance Movement’s Koboko flag bearer Dr. Charles Ayume something which left many with questions.

However during an interview on a local television when Kyagulanyi was asked why he decided to endorse a candidate from the party he is fighting to remove in power, he said that he is not fighting NRM Party members but he is fighting against the dictatorial tendency of Museveni.

“I will tell you that we don’t have any enmity with NRM. We are fighting against the dictatorial tendencies of Museveni,” Bobi Wine said.

Kyagulanyi added that he endorsed Ayume because he is a smart man who he is going to need when he becomes the President.

I am not endorsing people so that they can endorse me. I give credit where it is due,” Kyagulanyi said.

However, Ayume said that he didn’t ask Kyagulanyi to endorse him, and is not going to endorse Kyagulanyi because he believes in the values of the NRM Party.

Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Is Dead

0

Today’s evening, sad news have awash social media about the death of Kibuli Muslim Community’s Spokesperson, Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte. According to certified sources, Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte, a Muslim Imam leader in Uganda and head of Dawa in Uganda has passed on today’s late afternoon (4th/12/2020).

Initial reports show that he was rushed to International Hospital Kampala, where he breathed his last this evening. His death comes, after false reports a few days ago, that he had died which his son came out and rubbished.

Muzaata’s body is currently at International Hospital Kampala (IHK) where he had been hospitalized for the past days.

Muzaata’s brother, Mr Siliman Ssemakula told Daily Monitor’s reporter that he had been admitted at IHK for a fortnight.

“He has been my best friend as well. He died from here (IHK) where he has been for two week,”said Mr Ssemakula .

A lot of remarks have been made about the [now late Muzaata], among them include Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebagala’s who said that Sheikh Muzaata will be remembered as a person who fought for Islam and stuck by the truth.

“Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata has died, May Allah strengthen us this is a very difficult time.
My good friend, Imam of Imaam, you will be remembered as a person who fought for Islam and stuck by the truth,” Mr Ssebagala said.

REST IN PEACE SHEIKH!!!

Police & UPDF Raid Hoima Radio Station, Block Bobi Wine Show

0
Bobi Forced Out of Radio Show

Police and the army on Thursday raided a radio station which presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine had book in Hoima District in western Uganda as he continues to drum up support in Bunyoro sub region ahead of 2021 general election.

“Yesterday, we booked and paid to appear on Spice FM radio station in Hoima District. As soon as we got to the station this morning and started introducing ourselves, the police and military cordoned off the building and forcefully ejected us out of the radio station. We asked why they were doing this, and their answer was “orders from above” the Kyadondo East MP said in a statement on his social media platforms.

In june this year, the electoral commission said 2021 election candidates would have to campaign online and through the media to reach voters as part of new rules to stem the spread of COVID-19.

“We are going to take the matter up with security officers, RDCs, government at large and make sure that these measures are effected without any hindrance,” Simon Byamukama, chairman of the electoral commission said in June.

However, the 38-year-old popstar says he has so far been blocked from addressing Ugandans on thirteen radio stations across the country since he started campaigning.

The RDCs, or resident district commissioners, are representatives of President Yoweri Museveni stationed in every district. The RDCs, along with the police, have been known to deny members of the opposition access to the media – which has Uganda election observers worried.

“Mr. Byabakama and the Electoral Commission must tell us what the meaning of a digital campaign is, when we are not allowed on radio stations. Above all, Mr. Tibuhaburwa and his friends are right to be scared. Ugandans who wondered why we have been calling him the worst coward in history can now see for themselves what we have been saying. To you people of Hoima and Bunyoro generally, the time is now to regain our freedom. And I thank you for the great reception you are giving us everywhere in the midst of great intimidation? Bobi Wine added.

However, Bobi Wine is not the only presidential candidate who has been blocked from accessing radio.

Early this month, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate, Patrick Amuriat Oboi was denied access to radio stations in Soroti.

Amuriat, who was canvassing for votes in the Teso sub-region, said that his plans to have talk-shows on several radio stations were frustrated.

He said that radio stations that include Etop, Delta and Kyoga Veritas where he had booked for talk shows declined to host him citing intimidation from government.

UWEC Unveils Tiger Pair

0

A few months ago I heard about the introduction of a tiger pair in Uganda. Well, today, the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC) has let the cat out of the bag, over half a century since tigers were last seen at the then Entebbe zoo; the only place they’ve ever been known to live in Uganda.

Speaking at a press conference that was also streamed live on the wildlife center’s social media channels this morning, the UWEC Executive Director, Dr. James Musinguzi said the male and female pair (aged 2 years and 3 months) arrived on 7th March 2020 from a South African partner zoo before the national lockdown and have since been under the watch of the vet team at UWEC.

“The pair of tigers will be transferred from the quarantine facility to their specialized exhibit next week which has been made suitable to mimic their habitat, having gone through full mandatory quarantine for 90 days and are ready for exposure to the public,” Dr. Musinguzi adds.

“Tigers are known to be Asian cats. In Africa, they don’t exist in the wild but can be found in a series of zoos. Tigers are considered endangered according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They are territorial species and are the largest member of the cat family,” UWEC’s Dr. Musinguzi mentioned.

Eric Ntalo, the wildlife center’s publicist says, this tiger pair completes UWEC’s conservation education, research, and recreation concept in line with the #BigCats family joining its African relatives (the lions, leopards, and cheetahs). The famed Entebbe zoo will be the only place in the country to see them.

“Tiger reintroduction in Uganda is in partnership with the World Association of Zoos & Aquaria and the Pan African Association of Zoos & Aquaria (to which Uganda holds chairmanship),” – Dr. Musinguzi said. UWEC is also known to be the training center for zoos & aquaria in the region.

Like many passionate conservationists, I have had a question at the back of my mind. Why would a Ugandan wildlife center introduce exotic species like the tigers?

David Musingo UWEC’s Manager in charge of Information & Education says that in light of their commitment, wildlife conservation, as well as conservation education, is a global responsibility. He however assures wildlife enthusiasts that these exotic animals will only be kept at UWEC, and never introduced in the Ugandan wild as per the specifics dictated in a license from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

When asked about the cost of importing the two giant felines, Dr. Musinguzi mentioned that it would often cost about USD 30,000 to get one tiger individual but due to UWEC’s innovation, they were able to get the animals in a barter arrangement. About 25 monkeys were traded for the male and female tiger.

Just In: Bobi Wine Declines to Sign Police Bond

0

Fresh from Nalufenya Prison where National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine is being detained from is about his decline to sign Police bond papers in absence of his lawyers.

According to the Daily Monitor, sources within the police that preferred anonymity revealed that the Kyadondo East legislator was told to sign bond but he instead offered two options; to either be taken to court or unconditionally released without any charges.

Signing bond papers would mean he has to keep reporting at the facility as and when he’s wanted yet that would slow him down during his campaigns.

Meanwhile till now, Mr Kyagulanyi’s lawyers are still denied access to their the Pop star and have been directed to first meet the regional legal officer of police. Stay posted for more updates.
