The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) personnel have arrested four poachers in the Southern Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park following the death of a gorilla known as Rafiki, the Silverback of the famous Nkuringo group in the southern sector of the park.

The arrest follows investigations into the Silverback’s death by our personnel after a post-mortem report revealed that the Silverback sustained an injury by a sharp device/object that penetrated its left upper part of the abdomen up to the internal organs.

The team arrested Byamukama Felix a resident of Murole village, Nteko Parish, Nyabwishenya Sub County, Kisoro District who was found in possession of bush pig meat and several hunting devices including a spear, rope snares, wires snares and a dog hunting bell that were recovered from his home on June 4th, 2020.

Byamukama confessed to killing the gorilla in self-defense. He says that he had gone hunting in the park with Bampabenda Evarist where they came into contact with the group. When the silverback charged at them, he speared it.

He revealed that he shared some of the bush pig meat with Museveni Valence and Mubangizi Yonasi, whom he said were fellow poachers. The UWA team working with the Chairman LCI Chairman of Murole village Mr. Ngabirano Pascal, arrested Bampabenda Evarist, Museveni Valence and Mubangisi Yonasi on June 7th, 2020.

The four suspects are currently at Kisoro Police station awaiting trial in the courts of law.
On June 1st, 2020, Rafiki, the silver back of Nkuringo gorilla group was reported missing in the group and on June 2nd, 2020, our team mounted a search for the missing silver back. The body of Rafiki was found in Hakato area inside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Rafiki the Gorilla of Nkuringo

Four poachers have been arrested for killing of a rare silverback gorilla in Nkuringo in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) report, the silverback gorilla known as Rafiki was killed by a poacher with a spear. Rafiki has been popular with tourists for decades who go on gorilla safaris in Uganda. Rafiki is believed to have lived 25 years of age as a leader of Nkuringo gorilla family.

The Ugandan Wildlife Authority reported that Rafiki the silverback gorilla got missing on June 1 and the next day the rangers found Rafiki’s body. The ugly news from the forest shocked the tourism industry for losing the famous beringei beringei the leader of 17 habituated gorillas in the Nkuringo Family.

Despite the fact that tourism has been affected by coronavirus, it has been confirmed by the organization that poaching has increased in recent months where national parks have been on suspension.

According to the post-mortem report that was made by the Gorilla Doctors and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) showed that a sharp device or object had penetrated his abdomen and pierced his internal organs.

The authority imprisoned the poachers and one of them Byamukama Felix confessed of killing the gorilla in self-defense. He claimed the gorilla had charged at him while he and a colleague were hunting.

Felix not only defended himself but also pointed out his colleagues whom he had in the Bwindi Forest that is Bampabenda Evarist. Mr. Felix lives in Murole village in western part of Uganda and was found with several hunting devices, including a spear, rope snares, wire snares and a hunting bell for a dog collar with bush pig meats.

The authority reported that Mr. Felix mentioned Museveni Valence and Mubangizi Yonasi whom they were sharing bush pig with and were arrested on June7.

The Spokesperson of UWA reported that these four men were imprisoned for being found in possession of wildlife specimens, illegal entry into a protected area and killing an endangered species, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The last time a mountain gorilla died at the hands of humans was in 2011.

MPs Clear Government to Cancel 2020 Academic Year

0

Members of Parliament want the government to declare 2020 academic year, a dead year for education because of the increasing cases of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in the country.

While meeting the members of the Uganda Vice Chancellors Forum today, members of the National Economy committee of Parliament said that even though schools were to resume, it would be impossible to complete the syllabus and actually achieve what was to be attained in a full educational year.

Arua Municipality MP Kassiano Wadri says the problem with allowing candidate classes to resume and sit for examinations is that it will clog the entire system since non-candidates will not have progressed to the next classes.

He says there is also a problem of people who are studying online who cannot be assessed equally with those in rural areas. He has proposed that the government should consider this 2020 academic year dead, and every student will be on par to resume next year.

Museveni: Parents are asking me to cancel 2020 academic year

Kasilo County MP Elijah Okupa says that the government should forget about education this year and resume next year after adequate planning.

He says personally he will not allow his children to go back to school even if the government opens saying the preference is to keep them safe.

Okupa says although institutions need money to run and need parents to pay fees, the lives of students should be more important.

Aswa County MP Reagan Okumu also questioned if the institutions can survive if they are to open in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that hostels and classrooms are too crowded to apply social distancing.

He cites developments in Britain where schools have been closed after failing to meet social distancing guidelines.

Committee chair Syda Bbumba says that according to Centre for Disease Control, high-risk areas include schools and hostels among others.

To date, Uganda has recorded 679 cases and 120 recoveries and no reported death.

Kasirye Ggwanga

Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kasirye Gwanga is dead. According to family sources, Gwanga has breathed his last at Nakasero Hospital this morning. The nonsense soldier was admitted a few weeks ago with a life threatening ailment.

Last month, Kasirye Gwanga was been admitted to the UPDF Senior Officers Diagnostic Centre based in Mbuya. Later he was transferred to Nakasero Hospital where he has breathed his last.

The major general last had a public appearance in Mityana in March where he and his soldiers enforced the president directives against Covid-19.

WHO WAS MAJ GEN KASIRYE GGWANGA?
Gwanga was born in 1952,in Mubende District, to a father who was a hunter and farmer. Kasirye Ggwanga learned both skills and is still good at both. He attended Katakala Primary School, then he studied at Kibuli Secondary School for his O-Level education. After finishing Senior 4, he joined the Uganda Army in 1972.

Following boot camp and initial training, kasirye Gwanga was posted to Arua in the West Nile sub-region, as a map reader, serving in that capacity until 1977. In 1978, he was promoted to the position of artillery officer.

In 1978, the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) invaded Uganda. In 1979 they captured Kampala and deposed Idi Amin. Kasirye Ggwanga surrendered and was taken to Tanga, Tanzania, as a prisoner of war number 17341.

In June 1980, president Godfrey Binaisa negotiated the return of the political prisoners to Uganda. They were first housed at Maluku Prison in Mbale District. Later, they were moved to Kirinya Prison, Jinja District. On 7 October 1981, Kasirye Ggwanga was in the first batch to be released.

Three months after Kasirye Ggwanga’s release, the Uganda Freedom Army (UFA) rebels led by Andrew Kayiira attacked the army barracks at Mengo Lubiri in Kampala. The government in power at the time, led by Milton Obote of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) mistakenly thought that the recently released prisoners (former Idi Amin soldiers) were involved in the attack. Kasirye Ggwanga was placed on the “wanted list”. He went underground. His elder brother, Lieutenant James Kasirye, a military pilot then based at Nakasongola Military Air Base was arrested and tortured, then killed when he refused to identify where his brother Kasirye Gwanga was hiding.

To avenge the killing of his brother, Kasirye Ggwanga joined the UFA rebels, then about 650 in number. This group operated in the Mawokota and Mubende areas in Buganda. In 1985, he left UFA and joined Yoweri Museveni’s National Resistance Army, which captured Kampala, Kasirye Ggwanga commanded a 120mm artillery unit.

Between 1986 and 2005, he served in several roles including as the LC5 chairman for Mubende District and as the director of stores in the UPDF. On 31 January 2005, he was retired from the UPDF at the rank of brigadier. However, after three months on the outside he came back to the military and asked to be re-instated. The UPDF commander-in-chief allowed him to rejoin on a renewable contract of five years.

The Coronavirus pandemic hit the tourism industry heavily worldwide to the extent of suspending all the national parks in Uganda and the reports from the Queen Elizabeth national park are not good! The management of the park has reported that since the country went into lockdown in march this year due to the coronavirus outbreak, more cases of poaching have been registered in the park.

The outbreak of the Covid-19  led to a suspension of all tourism activities in the national parks of Uganda. With less monitoring, there has been increased activities of poaching and the park authorities have raised the red flag over the increase of poaching and illegal entry into the boundaries of the park by the neighboring communities.

Due to the current situation in national parks, UWA as a government parastatal resposinle for conservation of wildlife deployed the security personell and increased foot patrols after finding out that there were illegal entries into the protected area.

The Queen Elizabeth national park chief warden Pontus Onzima says that they had reported more poaching cases compared to pre-lockdown times. During the lockdown, 60 poachers were arrested within a period between March and April. The punishment given to these poachers is imprisonment just like the four men who killed Rafiki gorilla silverback in Nkuringo gorilla family of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in south western part of Uganda.

Onzima the chef warden continuously said that the increased cases of poaching is largely due to that many people lost their livelihood which forced them to look for survival in national parks. He also said that most poachers target small species of wildlife for food and that in the next two years, animal census scheduled will guide the park authorities on the extent of the damage.

The Assistant Tourism warden in Queen Elizabeth national park Nyaduru Steven says that Covid-19 has damaged the tourism industry thus reducing the resources that were meant to be channeled to protect wildlife. He continuously says that there is increase of vulnerability due to absence of both field guides and visitors resulting to fewer people that are available for animal tracking.

A Muhokya resident in Mukokya sub county by his names of Masereka Haran says that most people have lived with small jobs around the lake so their businesses have gone down since march because of Covid-19  which forced many people into poaching wildlife for survival since there is financial constrained.

On today’s afternoon, 5th/june/2020/, fire gutted one of the three deity houses (Ennyumba z’abalongo) at the Kasubi Royal Tombs. Fortunately, a team of workers and residents at the Kasubi Royal Tombs using the fire extinguishers within Kasubi managed to put out the fire with assistance from the Uganda Police Fire Brigade who arrived within a short period of time after the fire broke out.

It is however said, from trusted sources, that the deity (Abalongo) were protected during this period and none was destroyed during this fire outbreak.

This particular house is hundreds of meters away from Muzibu-Azaala-Mpanga, the main mausoleum at Kasubi Royal Tombs that is being reconstructed following the March 2010 fire outbreak. The media were today allowed to access part of the Kasubi Royal Tombs to ascertain the extent of the fire and accordingly inform the Buganda people.

The police has embarked on investigations to establish the cause of the fire outbreak and the Buganda executives have promised to communicate as soon as they get reports from them (police).

Former Uganda Cranes Captain ‘Jimmy Kirunda’ Dies at 70

0

We are saddened to inform you about the passing on of former Uganda cranes skipper and captain ‘Jimmy Kirunda’. The skipper captained the Uganda historical team that reached the 1978 Afcon finals that lost to Ghana on 2 – 0.

Ruben Luyombo, a sports journalist, published the sad news of the death of Uganda Cranes former captain Jimmy Kirunda. ”One of Uganda’s greatest football players, Jimmy Kirunda has passed on”, posted Ruben Luyombo on his facebook page on a Monday afternoon.

Meanwhile, factors surrounding Kirunda’s death are still meagre but it has been reported that he breathed his last from Bwaise – a suburb in Kampala.

Briefly About Kirunda:

He was born in 1950 and he has played for various local clubs including Express FC (between 1968-69), KCC now-days KCCA (from 1969-79) and then joined Abu Dhabi Sports Club. He however returned to his former local club, KCC, before joining SC Villa afterwards.

Cited by many as one of the best African footballers of his generation, Kirunda was a superlative defender but was also a gem when it came to his attacking capabilities. Though he was a defender, it’s really a shock that he scored 32 goals in 1978 Ugandan League while playing with KCC which saw him becoming a top scorer in that season.

Achievements:

During his 10 years spell at KCC, Kirunda won three league titles and two Uganda Cups whereas at SC Villa he also went ahead to win another league title as well as a Uganda Cup, making a total of 4 league titles and 3 Uganda Cups.

International Level:

Kirunda also captained Uganda Cranes for 10 years that included playing at the coveted African Nations Cup three times – 1974, 1976 and 1978. Certainly the most memorable one is in 1978 where he led the cranes to the Afcon finals where they sadly lost 2-0 to the hosts – Ghana.

On the national team, Kirunda won five CECAFA Cup titles (in 1969, 70, 73, 76, and 77). After retiring, he however coached the national team, winning three more CECAFA Cup titles – as a coach.

REST IN PEACE FOOTBALL LEGEND!!!!
