0

According to the Forbes, the world’s richest person, Jeff Bezos, is once again worth more than $200 billion, as shares of Amazon rose in anticipation of the company’s first quarter earnings report later this week.

Shares of the e-commerce giant were up 1.1% as of 11:00 a.m ET on Wednesday, pushing Bezos’ net worth up by $2.3 billion—to $201 billion—according to Forbes’ calculations. Investors have been eagerly awaiting Amazon’s earnings for the beginning of 2021, which the company will release after the market close on Thursday.

Bezos is the first person in history to be worth more than $200 billion. Meanwhile, it’s not his first time Bezos is hitting the milestone. He first passed the $200 billion mark in August 2020, an achievement previously unseen in the nearly four decades Forbes has been tracking billionaire net worths. Amazon stock soon fell, dropping Bezos’ fortune under $200 billion for the rest of 2020 and early 2021.

Stubborn Tibuhaburwa dares Biden, detains US citizen indefinitely

Guy Smith Milton, a US citizen who settled in Uganda for over a decade remains in security custody since his arrest close to a month back, this site has learnt. Guy was brutally rounded up by plain clothed security operatives at his residence in Fort Portal. He was seized and bundled into a Toyota Hiace vehicle and hurriedly driven to the Special Investigations Unit headquarters in Kireka, Kampala.

Despite efforts by the US embassy officials to sweet talk and convince the Ugandan government to drop the charges of subversion slapped on Milton, there have neve been any positive gain from the negotiations.

Guy’s family tried to sue the Ugandan security forces for illegally detaining their bread winner but still to-date, court has never issued a habeas corpus order.

Bobi Wine speaks out

I join the family, friends and lawyers of Guy Milton Smith in demanding for his unconditional release from illegal detention. Guy, an American national was picked up by a drone on 21st March, 2021 in Fort Portal, Western Uganda. For over a month now, he has been held incommunicado. The police claimed he was arrested for being involved in subversive anti-government activities. To date, he has not been produced in court. Guy joins countless Ugandans who are languishing in jails, ‘safe-houses’ and police cells across the country without trial.

The Constitution of Uganda demands that a person arrested over any crime, must be produced before court within 48 hours of arrest. The breakdown of constitutionalism and the rule of law has brought us to this point where the law means nothing to those who rule over us.

We must pile pressure and continue to demand for our rights and freedoms. We must pursue the struggle for freedom in earnest. Human rights must be respected because as we have seen, each one of us is a potential victim of a lawless state. You never know when your turn will be in this state of affairs.

Kadaga Orders Probe into Kitalya Prison

0

The speaker of parliament, Rt. Hon Rebecca Kadaga has instructed the house committee on human rights to investigate prisoner conditions at Kitalya Prison. This follows public concerns about the reportedly less than agreeable conditions that some of the inmates serving them are living under.

The concerns were raised by the Mityana municipality legislator Zaake Francis Butebi who on Monday paid a visit to the jailed supporters of the National Unity Platform party.

Zaake told plenary that he was compelled to drop a tear after observing the deplorable conditions that the inmates are undergoing. “The people are experiencing abdominal pains, they are poorly fed on half cooked posho. The hygiene itself is a disaster. Water is insufficient,” Zaake told parliament.

Angry Businessman Asks Court To Block Construction Of Kampala-Jinja Expressway

0

The chairperson of Kampala Kikuubo Traders Muhamadi Katimbo has petitioned court, seeking to block the construction of the Kampala-Jinja Expressway until he recovers his land titles from Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) .

In a case filed through Mugisa, Mutale and Co Advocates, Mr Katimbo claims that UNRA had before implementation of the project informed him that his land had been affected and was subsequently asked to handover his land titles to UNRA for assessment and onward compensation.

The project, according to documents before court, had affected land comprised in Kyaggwe Block 118 Plots 18, 23 and 24 at Kyungu-Mukono District, which Mr Katimbo had bought in 1994 from the late Christopher Musubire.

The land was subsequently assessed but Mr Katimbo claims that UNRA later informed him that his land was a subject of a dispute, therefore, the compensation would not be effected.

Court documents indicate that two individuals – Mr Eliya Nabbimba and Ms Christine Natyaba – had petitioned court claiming to be the rightful administrators of the land.

However, on June 2020, documents indicate, the Makindye Court deputy registrar had written to Mr Katimbo’s lawyers, noting that the letters which Ms Natyaba and Mr Nabbimba were holding were not authentic. Advertisement

On January 6, 2021, Mr Katimbo’s lawyers subsequently had a meeting with UNRA officials and agreed that UNRA hands over the land titles to be used in settling and or determination of the dispute on the land.

However, UNRA has since refused to hand over the titles and now Mr Katimbo is accusing UNRA of conniving to frustrate his compensation.

In an interview, Mr Katimbo told Daily Monitor police had arrested suspected trespassers on his land but some UNRA officials, who he does not name, allegedly interfered with investigations.

“The suspicious involvement of UNRA in the investigations raises a lot of questions. They have been tossing me up and down for a very long time. I now want court to compel them to return my land titles,’ he said.

UNRA speaks out

Whereas UNRA concedes that Mr. Katimbo is one of the project-affected persons, Mr. Allan Kyobe, the UNRA media relations manager, says it is difficult to compensate him because there are other parties claiming interests on the same land. “We have deposited the money in court. When the matter is resolved, the money will go to the rightful owner. We try as much as possible to ensure that the rightful persons are compensated,” he said.

Akon Ends Uganda Trip in Style

The Uganda Tourism Board, the Government of Uganda’s tourism marketing and regulatory agency over throughout last week held talks with Senegalese American musician and businessman, Akon on all matters tourism investment.

Akon, whose real names are Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam was in the country at the invitation of by Ambassador Abbey Walusimbi, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Diaspora Affairs to explore various investment opportunities in the country.

During his stay, UTB CEO, Lilly Ajarova hosted Akon and his wife Rozina Negusei for a familiarization trip to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the most visited national park, together with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are famous for the Mountain Gorilla and host 53% of the world’s population of gorillas. Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to over 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species.

Describing the gorilla trekking experience in a media interview, Akon and Rozina said, it was a rare, tough and beautiful at the same time. “We had an amazing time—a beautiful experience. “It was amazing, I got an up-close and personal shot with the gorillas… you don’t see shots this close.”

At another media address in Kampala, Akon said: “I cannot believe what I have experienced while in Uganda, the kind of welcome I never knew Uganda had and I’m determined to expose how beautiful this country is to the rest of the world.”

Commenting about the UTB-Akon talks,Ajarova said that Akon’s visit followsanother February 2021 meeting between Ajarova and Akon’s wife and entertainment entrepreneur, RozinaNegusei.

“One of the key opportunities discussed with Rozina then, and again with the couple was an opportunity for a huge potential for a back-to-Africa (in this case Uganda) International Music Festival,” she said.

She continued: “We also discussed marine tourism- given Uganda’s abundance of water bodies, the redevelopment of the Equator—UTB has profiled up to 6 areas of investment as well as the construction of especially luxury accommodation facilities in and around our 10 National Parks in addition to a favourable business environment such as government incentives, widely available and affordable labour, all, combine to make Uganda, one of the best places to visit and invest,” she said.

She also said that UTB, hopes to leverage the multi-platinum selling singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and actor’s celebrity and wealthy networks, first to create awareness about Uganda in the North American markets especially and subsequently influence investments inflows as well.

Ajarova said that the North American Market, that includes the United States of America and Canada, according to the just-released Uganda’s Tourist Expenditure And Motivation Survey (Tems) 2019 Report, by the tourism minister, although North America tourists constitute only 9.3% of overall tourism numbers to Uganda, they, together with European and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand) were largely leisure travellers that spend between 8 to 14 nights.  Nearly one-third of all leisure visitors were much more likely to stay in either Uganda’s Safari Lodge or Tourist campsites.

In an interview with Associated Press News, an American Newswire, Akon said that Uganda was rich with potential and indeed confirmed that his company was interested in and would host an international music festival in Uganda.

“Uganda is definitely a hub for investment. We’re looking to put together a huge festival here,” he said, adding: “We do want to be able to invest in the local artists. One of the reasons for the festival is to expose the local artists here in Uganda because they play a big role in the East African music alongside Kenya and Rwanda and Congo as well too.”

Akon also hinted at plans to build what he called an entertainment city in Uganda.

“That is on the list of things that we are doing. That is one of the reasons why we are doing the Akon Entertainment City here; because we want to be able to focus and showcase the entertainment all throughout East Africa,” he said.

What Next After Archibishop Lwanga Death

0
Archibishop Kizito Lwanga

Rev. Fr. Anthony Musaala has penned down a heartfelt message about the death of the Archibshop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who died last Saturday.

The sudden death of Archbishop Cyprian Lwanga leaves a yawning gap in our lives. As the catholic community in Kampala and beyond we sense that we have lost a ‘cornerstone’.

Many questions in many hearts need to be answered, especially regarding the Arcjbishop’s death, in a manner which is more convincing than the medical report, which for all its scientific details, does not seem to have closed the matter.

There is gratitude for the appointment of Bishop Semwogere, the new apostolic administrator of Kampala archdiocese who is probably the best candidate to step into the breach at this time. Bishop Semwogere was Vicar General before becoming bishop of Luweero and knew the mind of the late Archbishop. His appointment may ensure some continuity in the Archdiocese, until any major new changes, are properly considered by a new Archbishop.

Bishop Ssemwogere may or may not be confirmed as the new Archbishop of Kampala. The new apostolic administrator and indeed all of us will have to contend with some disruptions and confusion in many areas of the pastoral life of the diocese, from the grass roots to the top administration during this period. These disruptions are inevitable when a powerful figure, like Dr Lwanga suddenly disappears from office in the church, but some balances must be made between what has been and what wants to be, in order to avoid chaos. Some will insist on what the archbishop wanted while others may not wish to do so.

The absence of the late Archbishop Lwanga’s directives and his compelling presence leaves a certain vacuum, a disorientation, which needs to be skillfully managed. Those who were closest to the archbishop, either living or working with him, including domestic staff, personal assistants and relatives, will require sensitive pastoral care and personal help, since their loss is profound and questions about their status must be addressed sooner rather than later.

Inevitably much in their personal daily lives, will have to change as a result of this loss, for which they were not prepared. Official matters, which involved the decisions of the late archbishop will have to be carefully weighed by the new administrator and the existing office bearers in the archdiocese. Some of these decisions have both canonical and civil law implications which cannot be put off.

Questions as whether to proceed with the late archbishop’s vision and plans for the diocese, or to amend them or terminate them, will require the widest possible consultation and prayer, especially for the new administrator Bishop Ssemwogere, who ought not to pre-empt what a new archbishop may want to do. His role is simply to hold the archdiocese together, much as one holds a ‘crying baby’, until the mother comes.

May be as a guide, the late archbishop’s theme for the archdiocese this year could be referenced: ‘Fratelli tutti. Let us deepen our faith hope and love, by being good witnesses of Christ’.

Lets remember to say a prayer.

Four Arrested Over Lion Deaths in Queen Elizabeth National Park

In connection with the death of lions, an incident that was reported in Queen Elizabeth national park, four people were arrested. The four suspects were arrested on March 23rd 2021 by a security team that comprised of UWA rangers, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Criminal Investigation Division (CID). The four were arrested from the Kyenyabutongo Village, Rusoroza Parish, Kihihi Subcounty in the Kanungu District of South Western Uganda.

The arrested individuals are Ampurira Brian (26 Years), Tumuhire Vincent (49 Years), Aliyo Robert (40 Years) and Miliango Davi (68 Years). They were arrested in a joint operation mounted by the UWA, the Uganda Police and UPDF.

The suspects later led the team to a location where the three heads of the poisoned lions were hidden. The heads were hidden in a tree and the fourth one was buried with 15 legs under the same tree. The suspects revealed that they dropped one leg in the park.

The Uganda Police reports that three bottles containing a poison chemicla known as Furadan have been found in possession of the suspects.

A two litre jerrycan of lion fat oil were recovered in a banana plantation. Two spears, one panga and a hunting net were found hidden in the garden of Tumuhire Vincent.

Carcasses of lions that have been known for climbing trees were discovered in the Ishasha Sector in the evening of Friday March 19th 2021. The lions were found dead with their heads and paws hacked off, and their bodies surrounded by dead vultures, something that led the rangers to suspect poison.

After mounting a search, the security agencies received credible information about the people suspected to be behind the death of lions. Acting on the intelligence reports, a joint operation by UPDF, Uganda Police and UWA was conducted leading to the arrest of the four suspects.

The suspects are to be arraigned in the courts of Law and the Uganda Wildlife Authority assures the public that security has been strengthened in all national parks in Uganda.

UWA encourages visitors to go on Uganda safaris and has argued that protected areas are safe and attractive to visitors.
