Govt to pay Shs10 billion to Ssebulime’s Family in Compensation

Ssebulime

KAMPALA: The Family of slain Ronald Ssebulime who was last week shot dead by a police officer in Mukono District is demanding Shs9.9 billion in compensation from the government.

Ssebulime who was riding a motorbike was arrested, handcuffed before being shot dead by police on Sunday March 24 after being suspected of trying to kill the State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Ms Idah Erios Nantaba.

Ms Nantaba, who is also the Kayunga District Woman Member of Parliament was on her way from Kayunga heading to Kampala when she reportedly alerted police that someone she suspected to be an assassin had been trailing her for over 40 kilometres.

Police through its Spokesperson, Mr  Fred Enanga has since apologised to the general public that Ssebulime was innocently murdered as he was heading to a school to visit his children.

Ssebulime’s family through Muwada & Company Advocates, on Friday wrote a notice of Intention to Sue which they addressed to the Attorney General, Ms Nantaba, Cpl Edward Ssali, PC Ronald Opira, PC Ronald Baganza amd PC Edward Cherotich.

“The murder of Ssebulime has caused gross loss of sustenance on all dependants, totally devastated the feelings and hope of the surviving dependants, has left the family totally helpless whose minimum remedy in tort and law stands at Shs9,949,000,000,” the notice reads in part.

The lawyers put their legal fees at Shs19 million.

The family through the law firm wants the government to prosecute all persons responsible for the murder of Ssebulime lest they commence private prosecution.

They also want the government to ascertain the mental state of Ms Nantaba “whose continued conduct before and after the murder continues to raise suspicion.”

They want the government to disown what they described as Ms Nantaba’s ‘rhetoric’.

“Should you fail, ignore, abandon, delay or refuse to adhere to our lawful demands herein, we have strict instructions to commence all legal redress and seek all remedies herein from both local and international courts of law at your cost and continued public and international embarrassment,” the March 29 notice reads.

It is copied to the Inspector General of Police, the Director of Public Prosecution and the Chairman of the Uganda Human Rights Commission.

MURDER: Patrol told us lies, Ssebulime was illegally killed – Enanga Admits

0
Fred Enanga

KAMPALA: Police has admitted that Ronald Ssebulime who was on Sunday shot dead after being suspected to have been trailing ICT Minister Idah Nantaba, was murdered.
According to the Police statement released by the Spokesperson Fred Enanga on Wednesday, a joint team of investigators from the Kampala Metropolitan East Region and Homicide squad from CID headquarters, established that what was first reported as a typical police case, where perceived dangerous suspects were shot at during a pursuit, was instead a straight forward case of murder.

“The 999 crew from Mukono that responded to the earlier emergency call from Nagalama police station, intercepted the alleged suspects after they hit a road hump and fell off. The crew concentrated on the rider Ssebulime, who was carrying a bag, chased and after a few warning shots in the air, the suspect stopped and surrendered to the police, who arrested and led him to the police vehicle. The stranger, whom he was carrying, to guide him to St. Andrew Kaggwa for visitation, also disappeared and was not traced. It is true that the deceased was removed from the police pickup and instantly shot dead by our officer,” part of the police statement reads.

Mr Enanga said police has arrested three of its officers for trying to conceal the true facts of the events surrounding the killing of Sebulime Ronald, after they submitted false reports about what really happened upon intercepting the suspects at Nagojje trading centre in Mukono District.

He identified the officers as; No. 51543 Cpl Ssali Edward, who was the car commander, No. 50162 PC Opira Ronald and No. 5729 PC Baganza Ronald. The other crew member No. 62163 PC Cherotich Robert is currently on the run, but wanted according to Police.
Mr Enanga said their investigators found out that the bag which was captured as an exhibit, comprised of eats and drinks belonging to the deceased who was reportedly heading to St. Andrew Kaggwa for visitation.

He extended sympathies to the family of Ssebulime, saying police does not condone any acts of extrajudicial nature, the reason they are holding the suspects accountable for his death. Enanga also thanked the residents of Nagojje trading centre and the media, for “boldly bringing out the facts, about what really happened”, adding that without their concern, this would have been one case where the narrative from the first responders could have defeated justice.

Judith Heard Cries of Leaked Nudes, Wanted to Commit Suicide

0
Judith Heard

KAMPALA: Popular Ugandan model and activist Judith Heard has come out to say that she was arrested and shamed in the local media when her nudes were published without her consent last year.

Heard who was talking to the BCC said she came under attack in the local media and online after nudes emerged. The photos, she said, were downloaded from a stolen laptop.

“I have comments on Facebook attacking me about my private parts. There is no day that I am not reminded of my private parts. And when I hear them say I leaked my pictures, it really kills me,” she said.

“I was very… worried. I didn’t want to leave my house because I was scared that I might get out and maybe be killed…I might get out and maybe get stoned,” she said.

Though she says she was charged under Anti-Pornography Act, whose jail sentence carries 10 years, heard maintains her innocence.

“Whoever is doing this has the reason why they are doing it and I would never find out why,” she says. She says the nudes were leaked without her consent.

She said the nudes published in 2018 was the second time it happened to her and that the first time it happened she wanted to commit suicide.

She is now urging Ugandan women to talk openly about sexual abuse – and to show solidarity with one another.

“We are being broken every single day and we cannot come up to talk about it,” she says.

Some time on her Instagram page she urged people to face fears instead of running away from them.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along,” she posted on Instagram.

28 Years of Gorilla Tourism in Uganda

0
African Mountain Gorilla

Presently, gorilla tourism is of no doubt that one most valuable asset Uganda boasts of and remarkably, it is what sets it apart from other destinations in the world. Besides exciting moments that visitors get, gorilla tours today do play an incredible role in the country’s economy and since its launch, it has been one of the leading safari activities. It contributes about 50% of Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) income every year. Gorilla adventures date about 1991 for Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and within the less known Mgahinga National Park, gorilla visits started in 1993. It all began as a way to promote eco-tourism.

Gorilla tourism in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest began with Mubare and Katendegyere as the first groups to be habituated. By 1993, the two families were ready for trekkers on Uganda gorilla safaris to explore. Later, Katendegyere group disintegrated itself around 1997 and formed Ibaare-Habinyanja group. The 4th family to be habituated is ‘Nkuringo’ that also opened for visitor exploration in April 2004.

Despite the fact that gorilla tourism officially began in 1991, it had its own history in Uganda. Tourists used to pay a visit to Mgahinga Forest Reserve to search for these remarkable creatures around 1950s and late 1970s. Government of Uganda became concerned about haphazard attempts and by May 1989, it executed a complete ban on gorilla tourism in the country as measures were set in line with those in Rwanda and DR Congo where this adventure began way back.

In Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Nyakagezi is the only habituated gorilla group that is set for tourism. 28 Years later, there are about 17 habituated families that are available for visitors to track while on safari in Uganda. They include among others Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura, Katwe and these are found within Buhoma region; in Ruhija area- you will find Oruzogo, Bitukura, Kyaguliro; Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Bweza in Rushaga and lastly, Nkuringo region features Nkuringo and Christmas group.

For visitors who wish to enhance their experiences with these creatures, there are also two groups set for gorilla habituation experience. They include Bushaho and Bikingi within the Rushaga Sector. The increase in habituated groups also comes with increase in number of gorillas where today about 1004 of them are distributed within the jungles of Bwindi National Park and the Virunga Massif.

The Virunga Massif consists of three trans-boundary national parks; Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda and the Virunga National Park in eastern DR Congo.

Due to ecological reasons, initially, only 6 visitors were allowed to track one group each day. Today, the number has been increased to 8 visitors who can do gorilla tracking in a habituated family per day. All this was aimed at harmonizing gorilla tourism in the respective gorilla area in relation to tariffs, standards and health matters. As well, due to increased demand, the cost for gorilla permits in Uganda increased from $350-$500 and presently, each permit goes at $600 per person in Uganda. The interesting part of it is that, the revenue collected from gorilla tours is given back to nearby local communities under revenue sharing scheme.

Significant increase in accommodation facilities

Unlike before, today, many lodges are distributed in and around Bwindi Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park and this is one factor that makes gorilla safaris complete in Uganda. They include Gorilla Mist Camp, Gorilla Valley Lodge, and Nkuringo gorilla camp, Silverback lodge, Engagi Lodge Bwindi and many others. Budget lodges include Broadbill Forest Camp, Buhoma Community Rest Camp, Wagtail Eco Safari Camp and Nshongi Camp. Luxury safari lodges on the other hand include Buhoma Lodge, Chameleon Hill Lodge, Mahogany Springs Lodge, Clouds Mount Gorilla Lodge, Gorilla Forest Camp, Gorilla Safari Lodge, Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge, Volcanoes Safaris Bwindi Lodge and many more. In Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, they include Mount Gahinga Lodge, Mucha Hotel Kisoro, Kisoro Tourist Hotel, Traveler’s Rest Hotel Kisoro and Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp.

How to get to Bwindi and Mgahinga National Park while on gorilla safari in Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Park can be reached either by road or by air. By road, you will spend about 8-10 hours from Kampala/Entebbe to Kabale/Kisoro. By air, you can take a flight from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi airfield and you land into Kisoro airstrip where you can easily drive to Bwindi National Park or Mgahinga National Park.
