The body of Olavi Matovu, who drowned on Sunday while at a boat cruise on Lake Victoria has been found after 36 hours of search.

The body was discovered 400 metres from the Munyonyo marina in a lagoon, coincidentally the same area he had disappeared.

Police said it was afloat the water with flesh swellings and a bit lighter than his presumed weight.

Olavi is a son to businessman Haji Yusuf Matovu, drowned over the weekend while at a boat cruise with his friends.

According to a man who was among the last people who saw him, Olavi decided to take a dip in the water at around 6:00pm by the boat and he suddenly disappeared in the water.

He said the deceased was a strong swimmer that he was known to do long distances on the lake sometimes hauling faulty jet skis along.

“He didn’t yell or wave frantically or fight, or anything. He just went down in a twinkle,” New Vision quotes the man.

The Police Marine Unit together with the Special Forces and air force soldiers found the body on Tuesday afternoon.

The body has been taken to Mulago Referral Hospital for further investigation by pathologists.

However, a preliminary investigation on the body by the police surgeons indicates that Matovu had external injuries on his body and a paper card fixed to his forehead.

Josephine Nakafeero is a journalist currently working as a presenter of a fashion show called Omusono at NBS TV. She last Friday held a successful Fashion runway at Sheraton Hotel where she got a huge turn up of audience. The fashion show dubbed the Fashion Runway Project also saw the launch of Silhoutte Fashion House. UGO talked to her about the event and this is what she had to say.

The event turned out a success, what was the trick behind?

GOD. I thank God for having given me such a big audience.

Weren’t you surprised by the audience’s turn up?

I was actually not surprised because I expected it. First of all, I’m a born again christian and a night before i was in church praying to God to give me a successful event. I expected it!

I also talked to the man of God prophet Samuel Kakande who prayed for me so that everything goes on well. He prayed for me and my project so I knew I had Jesus with me to work out miracles for me.

What inspired you to come up with such an event?

I drew my inspiration from Oprah Winfrey and Tyra Banks. Whenever i was in the hostel, i would go in front of my mirror and test myself. Being a Ugandan, I want to create a platform where fashion designers can showcase their talents and this is exactly what Fashion Runway Uganda is trying to do.

Your show was had several radio and TV personalities walking on the runway, how did you pull it off?

I was easier to convince them since I am in the media myself and they are my friends and colleagues.

Why Media personalities and not the usual models we are used to seeing at such events?

I chose media personalities because I wanted to give our fans something beyond ordinary runway. This is because in most cases, these are the people who inspire and influence the dressing patterns of many people. So I wanted to pass over the message to our fans that they too can look good in our outfits.

What is your message to the young fashionistas out there?

My message to the fashionistas out there is that, with God, all things are possible. Even when things seem so hard, keep pressing and never give up. That’s the only way you will achieve whatever you want.

Eddy Kenzo has been nominated in the prestigious Jamaican awards, 33rd International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) scheduled to take place on 4 October in Fort Lauderdale, Florida USA.

He has been nominated in the Best African Song/ Entertainer catagory for his song Sitya Loss.

Eddy Kenzo will have to fight off competition from artists like; Davido (Aye), Awilo Longomba (Bundele), Willy Paul Msafi (Tam Tam), Diamond Platnumz (Mdogo Mdogo) and Bracket (Mama Africa), with whom he has been nominated in the same category.

South Africa based Ugandan singer, MC Norman is the only other Ugandan nominated in the awards. He will tussle it out with Daniel Bambatte Marley (Jamaica), Alkalina (Jamaica), Dabo (Tanzania), Kranium (Jamaica) and Shatta Wale (Ghana) in the Best New Entertainer Category.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Cliff, Sean Paul, Christopher Martins, Tarrus Riley, Luciano, Roman Virgo, Cecile, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, Beres Hammond, Beyonce, Mr Vegas, Snoop Dog, Collie Buddz, Busy Signal, Mavado, Bennie Man, Mack Diamond, Bounty Killer, Popcaan and Konshens are among the artists who have been nominated in the awards.

The IRAWMA, established in 1982 acknowledges and honors the accomplishments and contributions of reggae and world music artists, including: songwriters, performers, promoters and musicians.

Produced by Martin’s International & Associates, the IRAWMA has been staged in many major cities including: Atlanta, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, New Orleans, New York as well as both Montego Bay and Ocho Rios Jamaica.

Congolese Music legend, Koffi Olamidde has Thursday jetted into the country.

Koffi Olomide is set to perform at the Lugogo cricket oval in Kampala, Uganda, on April 25 thanks to the Rotary International Uganda that is behind his coming to the country.

The proceeds from the show will be used to build a new blood bank at Mengo hospital.

The musician known mainly in Uganda for his waist wiggling ladies and men, as seen in most of his videos, is expected to performed some of his classics like; Effrakata, Cle Boa, Lovemycine,Diabolos, Grand Pretre Mere and Soupou, among others.

Olomide started music in the early 80′s with Papa Wemba musical, viva la musica. He has trained many young musicians some of whom have since left his Quartier Latin band and gone solo while a few are still sticking with him.

Some of those who have left are Fele Mudogo, Sam Tshintu, Suzuki 4×4, Soleil Wanga, Fally Ipupa,Montana Kamenga, Ferre Gola and are so far doing fairly well on their own.

Olomide’s album Haut de Gamme: Koweït, Rive Gauche is listed in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

For his effort, Effrakata, released in 2001-2002, Koffi received four Kora Awards on a single night at the annual Kora Awards in South Africa for 2002 and 2003, including the award for Best African Artist, which he had earlier won in 1998. More recently, he has won the Kora Award for “Best African Artist of The Decade”.

The other musicians to perform along Olamidde are Jose Chameleon and Juliana among others.

Air Uganda has lost it’s Kigali Entebbe route to Rwandair after a temporary suspension of flights into Kigali International Airport by the Ugandan-based airline.

It is said that the Air Uganda had opted to operate the same route under a codeshare with RwandAir, airline officials have said as per report from NewTimes. The move means that about 337 passengers that hitherto travelled with Air Uganda daily on the Entebbe-Kigali route will be flying with RwandAir until the airline resumes operations.

According to Rebecca Asiimwe, the Air Uganda airport supervisor in Kigali, the new arrangement that started this month aims at reducing operational costs as well as enabling the airline to strengthen its visibility on the Entebbe-Mogadishu route.

“We thought that it was wise to operate through a codeshare agreement we signed with RwandAir last year and instead focus on other routes until we have sufficient aircraft for all the routes. Our passengers will still receive the same services through RwandAir as per code share arrangement” Asiimwe said.

Tony Barigye, the Rwanda Civil Aviation communication officer, confirmed the development, saying the sector watchdog was notified about the arrangement by both airlines.

Commenting on the development, John Mirenge, the RwandAir chief executive officer, is reported to have said that “the arrangement will allow the airlines continue to market their destination on their tickets as usual. A revenue sharing deal has been agreed…The initiative will ensure resource optimisation for both airlines.”

Air Uganda’s move follows South African Airways decision to also operate Johannesburg-Kigali route under a similar arrangement a few months ago.
