Bebe Cool’s Preaches About Appreciating Little Things in Life

Bebe Cool Katono

Gagamel boss, Bebe Cool has lived to his promise by releasing yet another song.

On the heels of ‘Mboozi Za Malwa’, which is already receiving fair airplay in the country, he has released a new single titled ‘Katono’.

‘Katono’ is a luganda word which means ‘small’ and it’s a Dancehall tune guaranteed to make everyone dance away to every beat of the song. In this dancehall anthem, Bebe Cool says that; “You borrow money to wed your wife but instead the lender takes off with your wife (after failing to pay back).”

The song’s message is all about being content with the little things in our lives as opposed to flossing with borrowed stuff or worse still living beyond our means all in the name of impressing society.

It further discourages endless borrowing to satisfy society’s demands at the expense of one’s future. ‘Katono’ was recorded in Kampala – Uganda (East Africa), written by Black Skin, Produced by Eno Beats, Video shot by Sasha Vybzy and Mastered / Mixed by Ogopa Inc.

Bebe Cool is currently in Kenya for the Coke Studio Africa, where he recorded a song with American musician, Jason Derulo.

Uganda Passport

The Ministry of Internal Affairs regrets to inform the general public that the stock of Ordinary Passports is running low and this may cause some delay in getting your passport issued or renewed. This shortage has been caused by the following factors:

  1. In line with the regional requirement to migrate to e-passport by 03rd April 2017, Uganda had planned to phase out the current Machine Readable Passports and replace them with the new generation of passports embedded with an electronic chip (e-passports). The process of procuring a provider for the e-passport is however still on-going.
  2. Further to the above, we have experienced an unprecedented increase in demand for Ordinary Passports which has doubled in the past over one year.

The combination of the above stated factors has greatly affected our projections of demand for passports.
We wish to assure the public that the Ministry of Internal Affairs takes this matter seriously and is therefore putting in place urgent measures to replenish the stock to normal levels.

As an interim measure, priority with respect to issuance of Ordinary Passports will be given to the following categories of persons:

  1. Proven medical cases;
  2. Certified applicants proceeding on government business;
  3. Students on scholarships;
  4. Any other qualified case of emergency.

The other categories of passports such as East African passports, Official and Diplomatic passports are available in adequate quantities.

In the spirit of facilitating free movement of persons within the Northern Corridor (Kenya and Rwanda), East African Community (EAC), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the following alternative Travel documents are available to the public and we encourage travelers to use them;

  1. East African Passport for those intending to travel within the EAC region.
  2. National Identity cards for those intending to travel to Kenya and Rwanda.
  3. Certificate of Identity for those intending to travel within COMESA member countries. This can be obtained at the regional offices or Points of Entry/Exit.
  4. Temporary movement Permits.

We wish to inform the public that we shall continue to receive and process applications from the public. In the meantime, we discourage payment for Express passport processing services.
We apologize for the inconveniences caused to the public. However, we are doing everything within our means to restock and clear any accumulated backlog as a result of this shortage in the shortest possible time.

Museveni Leads Campaign to Eliminate HIV/AIDS by 2030

Museveni Testing for HIV

President Yoweri Museveni has committed himself to personally lead a new initiative that is hoped to eliminate the scourge of HIV/AIDS from Uganda by the year 2030.

The President will next week on June 6th launch what has been termed as the Presidential Fast Track Initiative on Ending AIDS in Uganda by 2030.

The initiative follows concerns by the President about the increasing prevalence of the killer disease in the last few years, despite tremendous achievements in the past.

In the early 2000s, Uganda was among the world’s top champions of the fight against HIV, having brought down its prevalence to about 5%.

The president and the NRM government were greatly praised globally for the achievement.

The scourge however has taken root once again, with the number of new infections jumping by 21% from 2005 to 2015.

According to Uganda Info, the most recent records tag the HIV Prevalence in Uganda at 7.1% with an estimated 1.5 million people living with HIV.

This trend has had President Museveni worried according to a statement issued Thursday by the Uganda Media Centre about the program launch; prompting him to take action, but himself.

“In line with the UNAIDS fast track strategy, the president has decided to directly lead efforts to end HIV as a Public Health Threat in Uganda by 2030,” the statement reads.

As such, the President “has provided a five – point plan to engender a renewed country focus which will drastically reduce new infections and achieve epidemic control in Uganda.”

President Yoweri Museveni “direct” leadership of this ambitious initiative, analysis might point out, implies that he envisages himself in his current position as president by the year 2030.

He his is however, fast approaching the presidential age limit of 75, and the currently constitutional provisions bar him from running again in the next election.

The Presidential initiative lists five focus areas, in this fight against the killer disease, namely;

Revitalise HIV prevention and close the tap on nee infections (particularly among young girls and women and their partners)

Consolidate progress on eliminate Mother to Child Transmission of HIV

Accelerate implementation of “Test and Treat” and attainment of the 90:90:90 targets with emphasis given to men’s utilization of services

Address fanatical sustainability for HIV Response

Reinvigorate institutional effectiveness and multi sectoral response.

UN Awards Ugandan Innovators With $10,000

0

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, in collaboration with Outbox, a local business incubator have awarded $10,000 (about Shs35million) to four groups of Ugandan youth innovators.

The four teams are Ecosmart pads; Bloodfinder; m-scan, and Health data harvestor.

They address challenges in: improving access to essential maternal medicines, health supplies and improving the use of data in healthcare planning, monitoring and delivery.

Their solutions include: recycling sugarcane bagasse collected from sugar factories and using it to make bio-degradable pads that will hit the market at half the price of the existing pads on the market; enabling organisations that manage distribution and storage of blood catalog and track availability of blood through an online platform to support emergency responses.

They also develop an ultrasonic probe and software to support ultrasound scanning in low resource areas so as to address the problem of inadequate ultrasound services and a web based platform/ mobile app that addresses the problem of manual patient data collection by digitizing this process for medical professionals consecutively.

“Investing in a healthier and more educated population and enabling young people to access opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship, will provide young Ugandans with a favourable environment to thrive in business and private life, and to make informed and safe decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health,” said Davide Piga, UNFPA ESARO Innovations and Knowledge Management Specialist.

Meanwhile, also unveiled is the final three ‘Up Accelerate’ teams that have gone through an intense 4 months of proficient mentorship, business training, technical guidance and product development.

This marks the beginning of the second cycle that witnessed yet another set of 10 teams who pitched their innovations at an independent panel of judges.

Before a panel of judges, DrugDash, a decision support system for health facilities and drug distribution organisations to capture stock data returns.

The second innovation group is Streamline, a web and mobile application that supports health workers to easily collect data and TEHECA, a provider of care assistants who serve to provide alternative patient care to expectant and new mothers, have showcased their expertise which is key to enable them build partnerships and raise follow-on funding for sustainability.

To demonstrate the progress by the teams, Streamline is deployed to two hospitals in Mbarara and being used by up-to 35 healthcare workers. DrugDash is currently being deployed to up-to ten health care facilities in Bukedea to support thirty (30) health workers.

TEHECA has reached up-to 600 people through their awareness campaigns, and are supporting up-to 5 expectant mothers.

“I am excited by the dedication demonstrated by the three teams leaving the program, despite the intensity and short amount of time in the program, the teams were able to build their products and test their solutions with real customers,” said Richard Zulu, Outbox Team lead.

Outbox will continue to support these teams during their market pilots through mentorship, technical guidance and development of networks.

Up Accelerate is a one-year innovative program comprising 2 cycles of which the first started in November 2016 and has been successfully accomplished. It is part of a regional initiative by UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Office, with funding from UKAID.

The program has also been developed with support from Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, and implemented by Outbox to explore new and engaging ways to tackle pressing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges in Uganda, while promoting social entrepreneurship among young people. The second cycle is set to run up-to September 2017.
