Uganda Premier League has been in action with a number of matches being played this evening.

Busoga FC formerly Kirinya Jinja SS has stunned hosts, Express FC at Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku after being helped with a stunning performance from danger-man Joel Madondo.

Madondo scored the opener before Frank Kalanda equalizing for the Red Eagles by converting from the spot after Douglas Muganga brought down Isaac Doka in the forbidden area of the unpleasant surfaced pitch that was destroyed during the concert that was hosted in the place on Sunday.

However, Coach George Ssemwogerere’s boys expectations were later cut shot after Madondo assisted Boban Zirintuusa to net the visitor’s second that also confirmed the three points for them in the bag.

The result piles more pressure on Express FC head coach who many Red Eagles faithful feel deserves the sack. They have won just one of their five home games this season (D1 L3) leaving them in 12th spot with 10 points from 10 games played while Busoga climbed into the 4th position with 16 points.

In the other games that were played, SC Vipers continued with the bragging rights on top of the Startimes sponsored league table after edging past new comers, Kyetume FC by 2 – 1 away from home.

Police FC also stunned the Purple Sharks, Wakiso Giants FC by 2 – 1 while BUL FC shared spoils with the limping Bright Stars FC with each side seeing the back of the net once.

Speaker Kadaga Directs MPs to Fly Uganda Airlines On Foreign Trips

The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has directed all Members of Parliament to always use Uganda Airlines on their foreign trips.

In an October 16, 2019 directive to the Clerk to Parliament, Kadaga says it is important for the Parliamentary Commission to ensure the national career is supported for the benefit of the country.

“I, therefore, write to you to ensure that all official trips of the Members of Parliament and the staff of Parliament while on official duties to a destination where the airline operates are scheduled with Uganda Airlines, ”the directive reads in a part.

The national carrier was finally revived early this year after being down for 20 years since its collapse.

Uganda Airlines last month received two new Bombardier CRJ900s to grow their fleet to a total of four aircraft at a function held at Entebbe airport.

Consequently, the national airline started commercial flights on August 28 with direct flights from Entebbe to Nairobi, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Juba, Bujumbura and Mogadishu.

Last month, it was announced that nine new routes including Kinshasa, Zanzibar, Asmara in Eritrea, Hargeisa(Somaliland), Lusaka, Harare, Johannesburg Djibouti and Addis Ababa will soon be added onto their schedule.

Uganda Airlines also expects to get two new Airbus planes in the next two years for long-distance flights and early this year orders for the A330-800 airliners were affirmed.

Speaking at the function of the Uganda Airline’s inaugural flight, President Museveni in a speech given by Prime Minister Rugunda said the national carrier will earn government an extra $450 million that was in the past going to other airlines.

“Each year, Ugandans were donating $450 million to other countries through foreign travels and this is a lot of money,” Museveni said in his speech delivered by Rugunda.

“There has never been a better time to resume commercial flights than now when the number of passengers is increasing every day.

Recently, Kadaga asked Ugandans, especially those in the diaspora to stop criticizing the national airline.

“We recently launched Uganda Airlines but don’t join those criticizing the airline. We need your support to market it. The aviation sector is an example of the great opportunities that Ugandans living abroad can invest in,” Kadaga said during the 31st UNAA Convention and Trade Expo in Chicago, Illinois two months ago.

We Will Not Kill Gays; Government Says After A Threat From Donors To Freeze Aid

Esther Mbayo

The government of Uganda has denied that it intends to reintroduce the contentious anti-gay Bill which was struck out by the court.

The Bill initially spelled a death sentence for culprits found practicing gay sex, which the President referred to as un-nurtured sex.

In a statement from the Presidency, line minister Esther Mbayo affirmed that the government said that no Ugandan life is in danger over their sexual orientation.

“On the allegations that members of the minority communities have been murdered, I would like to assert that the protection of human life is enshrined in the constitution of the Republic of Uganda and the laws therefrom,” the statement seen Friday reads.

Mbayo says that the government has robust security systems from national level up to the grassroots.

“Such cases should be promptly reported to police, investigated and proprietors brought to book.”

In her additional statement, the minister called upon gays to report anyone harassing them or abusing their rights to police.

“I would therefore like to appeal to all persons in Uganda including the minority communities to take advantage of the existing security systems to report any form of harassment or abuse of their rights.”

The move to retable Bill

Last week, the minister of Ethics and Integrity Rev Fr Simon Lokodo said the government planned to reintroduce the anti-homosexuality Bill on the floor of parliament.

“Homosexuality is not natural to Ugandans, but there has been massive recruitment by gay people in schools, and especially among the youth, where they are promoting the falsehood that people are born like that,” Lokodo said.

“We want it made clear that anyone who is even involved in promotion and recruitment has to be criminalised. Those that do grave acts will be given the death sentence,” Lokodo added.

The minister said the anti-gay Bill would be reintroduced and voted on in parliament sparking rumors that a legislator was granted leave to table the Bill.

Pressure mounts

Following Lokodo’s statements government was put on pressure by foreign donors including the US which insisted that they stand with the Ugandan LGBT community and would stand for the defence of rights and dignity of all citizens.

Other donors like the European Union vowed to freeze aid to Uganda citing that human rights are of ‘highest importance’ to them.

Officials from the World Bank also claimed they would be prompted into ‘action’ if the law is passed again. It should be noted that in 2014, the World Bank halted a $90m loan to Uganda for passing the Anti-gay Bill.

Following the threats from donors, the Uganda government has been forced to backtrack on their decisions and any form of preparations to retable the Bill.

Gahiza Island: Former Punishment Island Now Isle Of Leisure

Gahiza Island Retreat

Gahiza island, located in the far Western part of Uganda, Kisoro district. It is one of the 20 islands strategically positioned in the waters of Lake Mutanda, one of the fresh water lakes in the country.

The island dates back to over 600 years well-known as a torture or punishment site to the young girls in the region who got pregnant before marriage. This was something that was never tolerated by the locals in the days.

The local leaders would carry the girl who had committed that crime, taken to the island and left for dead either dying through starvation or failing to swim from the island to the near-by banks.

The lucky ones were saved by the pygmies from the surrounding Batwa communities or the local men who were not in position to pay the high dowry prices at the time. They would be taken and married off for free.

The near-by island well known as Kyangushu better known as the skeleton island used to be a burial ground for the bodies that were got from Gahiza island so that they would not bring bad omen to the mainland, skeletons remain visible till to-date.

The proprietor David Bakaine narrated what he went through to acquire this island and what it took him to turn the once a punishment island into a tourist soul restoration site.

“About 7 years ago, I had guests in Kisoro who were visiting the area for Gorilla tracking. After tracking, we needed more activities to do and decided to hike one of the beautiful hills in the region. When we reached the summit, we saw a beautiful lake down in the valley. Our local guide told us it was called Lake Mutanda. I had studied about it in school but never seen it. On the same Lake, I saw a small Island and because of it’s small size, I felt like knowing more about it or even owning it.” Bakaine starts his narration.

“Days later, after dropping tourists at Entebbe Airport, I returned to Lake Mutanda, left contacts behind to be notified if the owners were got, I received a phone call that the owners had been found, I scheduled a meeting with them, returned and negotiated the purchase of the Island.”

He says that after thorough negotiations, he purchased the 2 acre island for an amount that is less than 10 million, he says he found some indicators on the island that someone once lived there;

“There are some plants I found including the long ancient plants that I believe were planted to shield the reeds houses on the island from too much wind, tobacco, Guavas and others. Tools including pots, grinding stone that were used by ancient people to sharpen their tools.’’

“I brought my family and close friends and we had our night here, the people around the mainland kept flashing lights onto the island, In the morning it was a bit strange, many boats and canoes came and surrounded the island, people came and said and greeted us but non wanted to step on the island on that day, but as time passed they started getting close to me. After 3 months, they stepped a foot on the island and told me that they thought we would die if we stayed there.” He noted.

Bakaine says he got a small piece from the pottery he found on the island and gave it to one of his friend who had come to do hiking, he took it to the University of Millan in Italy who assessed and found that it was between 600-700 years and it appears that he is the first Ugandan to step on the island after a period of 600 years.

“When it was abandoned, it turned out to be used as a punishment island, in Western Uganda, there are three parts well known as punishment places to mostly the ladies who got pregnant before marriage, Akampene on Lake Bunyonyi, cliffs of Kisiizi falls and also the people of Kisoro area brought their ladies to this punishment island.” Bakaine narrates.

He adds that, “because of my experience in tourism for the past 19 years, when I came to this island, I found that the views were amazing, not many people used to venture onto the lake, I started to promote the area and today so many people have joined in to invest in the region in the most strategic locations and in the next years, Lake Miutanda will be the next big thing in Western Uganda.

He says he first named the island “Mutanda island” to depict the name of the Lake Mutanda but with time he found that it was not only sharing the name with the lake but the lake itself got the name from the biggest island on it called Mutanda island.

“When I checked through the archives I realized that the original name of the island is Gahiza and so I decided to turn it in form of a retreat on the lake and transform what used to be a punishment island into a paradise and it’s now called ‘Gahiza Island Retreat’. He said.

Gahiza is a name that is shared by the nearest community on the island but it also refers to the people called ‘Abahiza’ who are related to the rain makers and also considered to have special features like being born with two beans in their hands.

Lake Mutanda is one of the 6 minor lakes in the Kigezi region, it’s about 60 metres deep and about 2.5 kilometres wide, around Gahiza island is the biggest stretch of water but gets a bit shallower, its 9 kilometres from one tip where the river goes into the lake.

Gahiza island is found in the furthest point of Western Uganda in Kisoro district between Bwindi impenetrable National Park and Mugahinga National gorilla park. It is next to countries like Rwanda, DRC and one can easily take scenic views of the three mountains next to each other, Mt. Muhabura, Mt. Mgahinga and Mt. Sabinyo.

“I have developed nice cabins and intend to develop it further, I have finalised with the master plan and I hope to add about 12 rooms and a very luxurious restaurant. In the next five years we plan to get a helicopter so that people can fly into this area, enjoy and bring opportunities to the people.” Bakaine asserted.

While on the island, your assured of breathing naturally fresh air, visit to the Skeleton Island, boat cruises and swimming since it’s a fresh water lake, relaxation. The island is a base for those who come to visit and do gorilla and golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga National park, the Batwa trail.

Attractions around also include the three historic volcanoes including Mt. Muhabura well known as the Guide, it’s the highest with 4120 meters above sea level and has a crater lake at its peak, Mt. Mgahinga which is relatively smaller from the other two and gets its name from ‘pile of stones’ and Mt. Sabinyo with a jugged tip and acts as a boundary for the three countries including Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.GAHIZA ISLAND: ONCE A PUNISHMENT CHAMBER, NOW TURNED INTO AN ISLAND OF REWARDS.

Single Customs Directive Will Ruin Businesses – KACITA

Everest Kayondo

The chairman of Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) Everest Kayondo has accused Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) of “betrayal” after the tax authority issued a notice to the effect that all imports will now be processed under the Single Customs Territory.

In a notice signed by Dickson Kateshumbwa, the commissioner Customs department, the tax body said “all importers that effective immediately, all payments for home consumption declarations to customs shall be valid for only 72 hours from the date of assessment as opposed to 21 days reflected on payment registration notices.”

The directive means that importers now have 72 hours instead of 21 days to make declarations.

They will also be required to pay their customs duties at the first port of entry into East Africa.

URA said the move is aimed at harmonizing the country’s Customs rules with those of the East African Community, guided by the EAC Customs Management Act 2004 and the EAC Customs management regulations 2010.

But traders said it would make their life harder.

Kayondo said: “This system requires a lot of money. There is a lot of insecurity of the goods. Consolidators, off loading persons, custom bonded ware houses and agents will all be kicked out of business. They have just created a business crisis,” he said.

He said they are going to march peacefully to the ministry of Trade headquarters next week to protest the move.

Tom Byarugaba, a customs agent said URA did not consult stakeholders about the move.

“URA should consult traders before issuing such notices. This notice is going to hold all traders in Uganda hostage,” he said.

Fresh Kid

Fresh Kid, the popular upcoming young artist has been appointed the ambassador for street children.

The upcoming singer whose music career was close to be terminated by the minister of youth and children affair, Honorable Nakiwala Kiyingi has been surprised by the appointment by the same minister who wanted to put a stop on his career.

It seems the eight-year young rapper’s music career is again giving him a better life and he has started to garner some endorsements that may take him higher in the profitable music industry.

During the crowning of the head prefect at the Banteeka hit maker’s school, Kampala Parents Primary School, Hon. Nakiwala Kiyingi graced the function and this is where she announced the appointment of the young rapper as the ambassador of street children. The position is aimed at reducing the number of street kids who live on the Kampala streets.

As per now we do not know how Fresh Kid will  manage to take on this new assignment that seems not be an easy job. For long the Kampala streets have raised a high number of people including some of the promising artists in the Ugandan music industry, radio presenters and pastors. Getting the kids  of the streets is not that an easy job and there are many Non Governmental Organizations that have tried to offer these kids a second job!

It should be remembered that during the times, when the Youth and Children Minister tried to bar Fresh Kid from singing, many Ugandans warned Nakiwala to get her hands off the young artist and concentrate her efforts to getting the street kids off the Kampala streets. It is therefore surprising that the minister has appointed Fresh Kid the ambassador and we are not yet in the know whether she is to work with the eight year old kid to get off the street kids off the Kampala streets!
