CID questions Robert Centenary for ‘Defaming’ Kiyonga

Kasese Municipality Legislator, Hon. Robert Centenary today appeared at the CID Headquarters in Kibuli over the recent summon for allegedly defaming Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, former Minister of Defense over the recent clashes in Kasese that left hundreds dead.

In a letter dated January 19, 2017, Centenary Robert was summoned to appear at the CID Headquarters to record a statement over his defamatory words against Kiyonga in a Live Interview with NBS Television in regards to the Kasese killings.

On Tuesday, January 30, the shadow Minister for Tourism in the 10th Parliament presented himself in Kibuli and recorded a statement.

It should be remembered that, the legislator together with the Leader of Opposition, Rt. Hon. Winnie Kizza and all area MPs logded a case at the Hague based International Criminal Court in the aftermath of the “massacre” in which the Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere and 150 Royal Guards were arrested and still detained in various prisons in Busoga region with the king at Luzira.

UTL Ready to Talk with Airtel over Calls Termination

Uganda Telecom (UTL) board chairman Patrick Kaboyo has described as unfortunate, the decision by fellow telecommunication company Airtel Uganda to terminate phone call services between the subscribers of the two companies.

In a statement issued this yesterday, Airtel Uganda announced that effective Friday February 3, their subscribers would not be able to make calls to or receive calls from Uganda Telecommunications Limited (UTL) after termination of interconnection agreement and interconnection services between the 2 companies.

Addressing the media at his office in Kampala on Monday afternoon, Kaboyo said that the country’s oldest telecommunication company is willing to engage in round table talks with Airtel to amicably solve the impasse he said stems way back.

“Negotiations have been going on as far as 2015 and to us it has come as a surprise for Airtel to decide to go public about it,” Kaboyo said.

“In telecom business we interconnect and this particular case is fully known to the regulator who has been in the know for some time.”

“If they took that route, it will hurt and impact us as a business. It will erode confidence of customers in our brand but we are willing to sit on a round table to solve it. We hope the regulator (UCC) jumps onto it to help us sort it out. ”

Kaboyo explained that the said debts that led to today’s termination stem many years back when UTL started facing problems but said that over the years, they have tried to service these debts.

By November last year, UTL owed Shs 58 Billion to tax body URA, Shs 8 Billion to MTN and Shs22 billion to Uganda Communications Commission.

According to Airtel,Uganda Telecom Limited owes them over Shs 8 billion arising from unpaid interconnect fees and leased line services offered by the former.

Five Held Over Gen. Muhoozi “Presidential” Posters

Five youth are being held at Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) for printing posters that depict President Museveni’s son, Maj Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as 2021 presidential candidate.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Emilian Kayima said the five youth were arrested on Monday morning in possession of posters and press releases explaining how Maj Gen Muhoozi is the eligible presidential candidate in 2021 .

“We arrested the five youth at Kolping Hotel in Makerere. They had posters and press releases. We were tipped off by our intelligence people and we arrested the youth on site,” he said.

Asked whether the suspects were planning to hold a press conference since they had press releases, Mr Kayima said they are yet to know their motive.

“We have them at CPS and they are recording statements. We shall know their intentions in due course,” he said.

Mr Kayima identified the suspects as Mr George Mutumba, a councillor representing Kisowera Zone at Kawempe Division, Mr Twaha Jengo , Mr Abdul Karim Ddamulira, all residents of Kisowera in Kawempe, Mr Hamidu Walakira, a resident of Mulago Parish and a one William, a resident of Makerere Zone III.

Mr Andrew Kaweesi, the police spokesperson, said Maj Gen Muhoozi denied knowledge of the suspects whom he said would be charged with inciting violence, false presentation, and giving false news.

“Maj Gen Muhoozi has told us he has no knowledge about the group. What they have done is regarded as inciting the public and can lead to violence. They would be criminally charged,” Mr Kaweesi said.

He added that the suspects could have been mobilised by people who have been popularising the “Muhoozi Project” with criminal intentions.

“We suspect they have been used by people propagating the Muhoozi presidential project. These imposters shall be prosecuted for their criminal acts,” Mr Kaweesi said.

Maj Gen Muhoozi was early this month moved from the position of commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC) and appointed as a special presidential advisor in charge of operations.

Winnie Kizza Launches Balloon Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Woman Member of Parliament for Kasese and Leader of the Opposition(LOP) in the 10 Parliament of Uganda Hon. Winnie Kiiza has joined tourism promoters.

The legislator earlier this week launched the Alfa Tango air balloon at Queen Elizabeth National Park in Kasese district. The Tango will enable tourists to easily posted to most areas in the National Park.

The LOP was joined by State Minister for Tourism Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda at the launch. During the launch, she pointed out that tourism is key to Uganda’s development as it fetches a lot of revenue.

“Am back home to launch the Alfa Tango air balloon at Queen Elizabeth National Park with the State Minister for Tourism Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda. This will enable our tourists to easily access most areas in the Park as they appreciate nature. Any mindful leadership will never leave this country the same by virtue of these God given resources,” Winnie Kiiza posted.

Uganda tourism Gains Good Publicity at WTM UK

City tycoon and investor Mr Jack Pemba is set to fly Antoine Christophe Agbepa Mumba, known professionally as Koffi Olomide, a Congolese soukous singer, dancer, producer, and composer for his birthday celebrations slated for 3 February 2017.

The party will take place at Speke Resort Munyonyo and the dress code is Shades of Blue. The VIP invites only party will see the ‘Selfie’ (Ekotite) make a special appearance.

Koffi Olomidde is one of Africa’s most celebrated singers of recent times. He will be in Kampala courtesy of Jack Pemba of Pemba Sports Africa/Pemba Group of Companies.

The Legend Koffi Olomide confirmed that he will be in Kampala for tycoon and Investor Mr Jack Pemba’s party in a video which he posted online.
Koffi is the richest musician in Democratic Republic of Congo and the fourth richest in Africa. His total net worth is estimated to be amazing $18 million as of 2016.

Ayew Brothers Strike as Ghana Moves to Semifinals

Brothers Jordan and Andre Ayew scored for Ghana as they reached the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals Sunday with a 2-1 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in Oyem. Jordan opened the scoring after 63 minutes of a tight, bruising quarter-final in northern Gabon and Andre put Ghana ahead again from a 78th-minute penalty.

They are sons of Ghana football legend Abedi ‘Pele’ Ayew, ranked among the greatest African footballers of all time. Between the Ayew goals, Paul-Jose Mpoku levelled for DR Congo on 68 minutes. Ghana, seeking a first Cup of Nations title since 1982, will play Cameroon next Thursday in Franceville for a final place.

It will be a sixth consecutive semi-finals appearance for four-time champions Ghana, who were runners-up in 2010 to Egypt and in 2015 to the Ivory Coast. They overcame DR Congo without captain and striker Asamoah Gyan, who failed to recover from a thigh injury sustained in a group loss to Egypt four days ago.

“We corrected some mistakes at half-time and were a totally different team in the second half,” Ghana coach Avram Grant told Super Sport. “Both our goals were fantastic, as was the one scored by Congo, who were a well organised team.”

Uganda’s High Court to pronounce itself on missing twin baby

The High Court has set January 24 to deliver judgement in a case filed in 2013 by a Ugandan human rights watchdog against the office of the Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital and the Attorney General, over a stolen twin baby.

Center for Health, Human rights and Development (CEHURD) filed the case in the Kampala High Court on behalf of Micheal Mubangizi and Jennifer Musimenta . The couple want court to declare that their rights to a family have been violated, and that they are entitled to damages for their loss, having been informed by a nurse that their second baby had died.

The couple contend that they are traumatized and psychologically tortured every day of their life, every time they look at their other child. They argue that they are sure their child isn’t dead, she is alive and that they are now afraid of giving birth in hospitals.

Justice Lydia Mugambe heard the case and says the judgement will be ready next Tuesday at 4pm.

In her case Musimenta argues that on March 12, 2012 she developed labour pains, and was taken to hospital by Mubangizi. She further purports that on the same day at about 8pm, she delivered twins, and was asked for a bed sheet where the babies was wrapped.

Court documents show that on the discharge date of March 15, Musimenta left without the body of the second twin.

Musimenta claims that her request for her medical records before and after birth, were ignored.

Then when they insisted on having the body, they were informed that it could not be traced.

On March 16, 2012 they lodged a complaint at Mulago Police post after being told on March 18, by a midwife that the body had been discovered in a box.

Musimenta asserts that Police advised her to take a DNA test which also revealed a mismatch, and confirmed their allegations.

However then Attorney General Peter Nyombi, and the Mulago Executive Director Dr Byarugaba Baterana have refuted claims that they are responsible for the disappearance of the said twin baby purportedly stolen from the hospital.

AG stated that if at all the claims are true, government and the executive director cannot be held accountable for actions of the culprits who acted on their own volition.

President Omar Gulleh Of Djibouti Believes Trump Will Pay Little Attention to Africa

Djibouti’s president, Ismail Omar Gulleh says African leaders believe President-elect Donald Trump will pay little attention to Africa, but is hopeful that Djibouti can continue a strong bilateral relationship with the U.S.

“Africa does not appear on the foreign agenda of the U.S. president-elect, Donald Trump, but as Djibouti, we had a good and deep relationship with U.S. government which I am hopeful will continue,” Ismail Omar Gulleh said in an exclusive interview with VOA Somali Service on Thursday. “Our relationship was not with an individual but with U.S. institutions.”

Ending his 2015 visit to Africa, U.S. President Barack Obama warned the continent would not advance if its leaders refuse to step down when their terms end. “Nobody should be president for life,” Obama said.

However, last April, President Guelleh won third term in a disputed re-election boycotted by opposition parties. In order for Guelleh to win that election, parliament had to change the country’s constitution because presidents were limited to two terms.

Mind your business

Referring to Obama’s warning and the recent U.S. election results, Guelleh said, “Those who used to say we are giving lessons to Africa, you see what they are facing. It is none of their business to determine any incoming or outgoing African president,” he said.

The tiny East African country hosts the United States’ only military base on the African continent. In 2014, the U.S. and Djibouti signed a 10-year lease on the military base, Camp Lemonnier.

At the time, the based housed about 4,000 U.S. soldiers and other military personnel. The United States regards it as a major staging area for attacks against terrorists in Yemen and Somalia, where Djiboutian solders are part of the African Union force that has had some success against al-Shabab militants.

Chinese influence

Djibouti is also home to a military base from former colonial power France. Japan has also leased a military base, while there is a growing Chinese influence in Djibouti.

On Wednesday, Djibouti and its neighbour Ethiopia officially launched the first fully electrified cross-border railway line in Africa, a project 70 percent financed by China’s Exim Bank and built by China Railway Group and China Civil Engineering Construction.

Gulleh says his country is capable of managing those differences and sometimes rival foreign interests.

“All those countries which have bases and interests in Djibouti have been brought together by common interests, including the global anti-terrorism efforts, the piracy and economic interests. So that, we are capable of managing and maintaining good relationship with our friends.

Standard Gauge Railway to Boost Uganda’s Economy and Industrialization – Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni has said that the construction of the railway in the country will go along way in lowering transport costs. The project will also support the industrialization programme in Uganda.

The President made the observations when he received a progress report of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project, presented to him on Thursday at State House, Entebbe by the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Ltd. The delegation was led by the Company’s Africa Vice President, Mr. Lin Yichong.

Museveni who launched the US$3.2 billion Standard Gauge Railway construction in October 2014 thanked the Chinese Company for the wonderful job done so far.

“There is a lot of infrastructure deficit in Uganda. If we start on a clean slate we can more and more projects,” he said.

The President commended the company for inviting local suppliers to show them business opportunities in the SGR project.

He welcomed the investment plans of the company in Uganda such as the building of an industrial estate around the railway and a city in Mukono, the Kampala City complex and a railway polygenic school to train engineers to maintain the railway. According to plans, 15,000 Ugandans are expected to be trained.

The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) Ltd has invested nearly US$ 30 million so far in preparatory work for the SGR project, including feasibility studies and training 500 Uganda People’s Defence Forces’ (UPDF) soldiers in railway engineering, among others.

The Vice-President of CHEC for Africa, Mr. Lin Yichong, pledged his Company’s commitment to deliver strong economic infrastructure transformation to Uganda in a transparent manner devoid of corruption whereby local materials and indigenous Ugandan labour force will be harnessed to create jobs for the people of Uganda.

Airtel Uganda Rewards more Subscribers in “Tulumbe AFCON” Campaign

Airtel Uganda subscribers have kicked off the new year in style and excitement after the Telecom Company rewarded them with various prizes as part of the “Tulumbe AFCON” campaign.

This is the fourth group of customers to win with Airtel Uganda in the campaign that started in December last year. “Tulumbe AFCON” was launched to build support and enthusiasm for the national football team, the Uganda Cranes as they head to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Speaking at the handover, Mrs. Remmie Kisakye Kakuru congratulated the winners and thanked Airtel customers for the support they have shown to the promotion and the Uganda Cranes.

“Over the past weeks, we have had winners from all over the country, which gives us hope that the whole of Uganda believes in both the Uganda Cranes and Airtel Uganda. “Tulumbe AFCON” is our way of creating support for our national team, while also rewarding our customers who support both Airtel Uganda and the Uganda Cranes,” she said.
