Coca Cola Announces Progress in Fighting Plastic Pollution on World Environment Day

0
Coca Cola to Recycle Plastic

To mark World Environment Day today, The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling partner Coca-Cola Beverages Africa – Uganda, reaffirm its commitment to help create a world without waste.

World Environment Day was founded by the United Nations Environment to promote worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. This year, the UN is calling on people across the globe to help “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

In January 2018, the Company launched a global goal to fundamentally reshape its approach to packaging through its World Without Waste initiative. This initiative aims to collect and recycle the equivalent of 100% of its packaging by 2030.

“We recognize there is a waste problem in Uganda. So two years ago in 2016, we set up a subsidiary of Rwenzori Bottling Company called Plastic Recycling Industries (PRI). PRI is now the largest plastic recycling business in Uganda, collecting about 14 tons of plastic daily, and ridding the environment of close to 400 tons of plastic per month. PRI employs 1,500 Ugandans and empowers plastic collectors to earn a living, 80% of whom were previously unemployed women,” explains Conrad van Niekerk, Managing Director of Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Uganda.

Across the continent the Company’s packaging focus on design, collect and partner is making strides. In South Africa for example, the bottle water brand Bonaqua is packaged in an eco-twist bottle, which uses intelligent design to enable the bottle to be easily compressed and
take up less space in the recycling bin. And in Kenya, the Company has partnered with like-minded industries to launch the PET Recycling Company (PETCO) today, to promote and regulate the recycling of PET material after their initial use.

“We will be learning from brilliant examples across the continent to invest in a waste-free Uganda, said Maserame Mouyeme, Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability Director for Coca-Cola Southern & East Africa. “Our planet should not be harmed by bottles and cans and as Coca-Cola we must take the lead. Consumers around the world, including Uganda, care about our planet and they expect companies to take appropriate action. This is the critical journey that we invite others to join us.”

The Rwenzururu “woes” aren’t Over

0

This evening we have received the best news of the day. The release of the Omusinga from incarceration has been welcomed by many. Depending on the nature of conditions slapped against him, one couldn’t get more happier. There is a lot of logic in the set terms. One would come to a conclusion of summing it up that The state held bilateral talks with the Royals. Why wouldn’t the state allow Justice to take its course? Should one believe that the state is actually diverging our minds from the massacre?

Are our area MPs criminals or leaders? One would come to a conclusion that the State was politically fighting these MPs in this case. The chief Prince was Quick to say” This issue would only be handled by the state and the Royal Family” he was further quoted saying” The issue can be best handled out of court “. That wouldn’t be a problem, but the issue is ; What is the fate of the hundreds of Innocent people Incarcerated in Kirinya and Luzira Prisons?

Do the back door talks help to heal the wounds of the bereaved families? If the chief planner of the attacks according to the Apologies received at State House is enjoying life out of Cell, does it carry sense to continue with the investigations?

Barring the King from visiting his subjects literally means he is dethroned. Shall we remain Kingless even when the King is around Kampala? Am not done yet, what will happen when the case takes more than three years to be settled? We have seen many state cases flop after a very long waste of time. The vivid example is Besigye’s cases.

What message does it send to the subjects by airlifting the King to his home? Did the Royals decide to forget so easily the number of people we lost in the massacre?

Lastly, my Appeal goes to the Hon. Minister Kibanzanga to continue engaging with the State to drop all the framed cases against the king. Otherwise, the set conditions are equally an abuse to the subjects.

Mountain Gorilla Population Rises Above 1000

Mountain Gorilla in Uganda

Mountain Gorilla numbers have risen over 1000, a new census reports. At a colorful press conference held in Rubavu, western province of Rwanda, the results of the Virunga 2015/2016 census have been released. The mountain gorilla census of the Virunga Region have been established to have risen to 604 species. The new total represents an increase of 25% from the 2010 census.

The census involved 12 teams walking through the jungles counting the nests. The survey covered  more than 2,000km of difficult walk through the forested terrain across the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. The surveyors searched for signs of the animals, such as nest sites, and collected faecal samples for genetic analysis.

The report established that “within the area encompassing the Mikeno Sector of Virunga National Park in DR Congo, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, referred to as the Virunga Massif, there are 604 individual gorillas living as 41 groups and as 14 solitary males”. This is a rise if compared with the 480 individual gorillas found in 2010 living within 36 groups. In 2010, it was also found that there were 14 solitary males roaming the Virunga.

The Virunga Region

The Virunga Region is shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain gorillas roam freely across the borders and are jelously protected within three protected areas that are gazetted to the level of a national park. These are the Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Volcanoes National Park  of Rwanda.

The mountain gorillas live in two independent areas; the Virunga Region and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The 2011 Bwindi Gorilla Census established the total of the Bwindi population to be 400 and thus the global population must be over 1004 individuals!

What Does the Rise of Mountain Gorillas Mean?

The mountain gorilla is one of the most recognizable rare animals in the world and its population has been declared as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The new census reveals the surviving mountain gorilla population has now risen above 1,000.

The increase marks success for intensive conservation work done by different stake holders within the Virunga Region. There has been huge scores in joint management of national parks in Uganda and Rwanda, and gorilla tourism has proven to be a successful tool towards protecting the endangered mountain gorillas.

Different groups have been involved in promoting conservation of these great apes – local communities, governments, Non Governmental Organizations etc.

However a lot remains to be done in the Virunga National Park of Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a region riven by armed conflict. Since this year started a dozen park rangers have been murdered while on line of duty of protecting the endangered apes.

Mountain Gorilla Population Increase to Over 1000

0

The population of the mountain gorillas has increased to over 1000, the Virunga Census has revealed. This is great news to conservationists as well as the tourism fraternity in Uganda and Rwanda.

According to results just released by the World Wilde Fund (WWF) at a press conference held in Rubavu, Western Rwanda, the number of mountain gorillas in the Virunga Massif has grown to 604, a big increase from the 480 individuals counted in the last 2010 census!

“In the area encompassing the Mikeno Sector of Virunga National Park in DRC, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, referred to as the Virunga Massif, 604 individual gorillas were found in 41 groups and as 14 solitary males,” the report said. “This is compared with an estimated 480 individual gorillas in 36 groups and as 14 solitary males from a survey of the same area in 2010,” the report added.

The Virunga Massif is shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and in each country, this protected area is gazetted as a national park. The region is one of the few trans-boundary national parks in Africa and joint efforts have been taken to ensure conservation of the mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorillas are some of the rare animals and are only found in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. These great apes live in two distinct areas; the Virunga massif shared by Uganda, Rwanda and DRC as well as the Bwindi Forest National Park in South Western Uganda.

There has been a conflict on the total numbers of the mountain gorillas in the wild with some citations quoting 880 mountain gorillas while other quote 920. However with the last census held in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in 2011 that put the population of Bwindi to be 400 individuals the number of gorillas in the wild surpasses 1006 individuals. Though this is not the final result, there are more registered births in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park since 2011 and therefore the estimated number of mountain gorillas must be above 1040 individuals.

The Virunga Gorillas

Mountain gorillas are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These great apes are threatened by several factors that include poaching, diseases and political conflicts.

Though there has been a semblance of peace in the Virunga areas that belong to Uganda and Rwanda, a lot is still needed to be done in the Virunga National Park of Congo. In this volatile region, there are still various challenges that include;

  • Growing interest of Oil drilling in the region given that the park sits on possible oil wells
  • the off and on civil conflicts where by at one time, the rebels controlled tourism in the park
  • Low tourism arrivals in the area mainly due to unending conflicts that threaten security of the tourists
  • Poaching – Lots of rangers have been killed by poachers within the park

All in all we congratulate the national park authorities of Rwanda, DR Congo and Uganda as well as all the conservation partners who have worked so hard on this conservation success story.

Gorilla Increase and Tourism

Mountain gorillas are the formidable base for tourism development in Uganda and Rwanda as well as Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The major source of tourism revenue in Uganda and Rwanda has been gorilla tourism that is conducted within the Virunga and Bwindi. Gorilla Tourism is responsible for a large portion of the 1.35 billion U.S. dollars that Uganda earned from tourism in 2016, according to government figures.

Reports show that the conservation of the mountain gorillas has helped a lot in promoting tourism in the region. It should also be noted that the proceedings from gorilla tourism also help in the conservation of these great apes and therefore a win win scenario has been realised.

The increase in gorilla numbers is a great step towards promoting sustainable tourism development in all the three countries that protect the endangered mountain gorillas.
