Gorilla Tracking in Uganda

Gorilla tracking in Uganda dates back to 1993 when two groups of the primates were habituated. The process of habituation is not an easy one. It refers to the whole process of making gorilla groups accustomed to human beings, thereby facilitating close interaction without the danger of gorillas displaying aggressive behaviour. Today there are ten habituated gorilla groups that can be visited by tourists looking for gorilla trekking safaris in Africa thus making available 80 permits to be available a day! Though these look to be many, there is a very high demand for gorilla permits, and it is not easy to secure a gorilla permit for peak months like July, August, September and December.

According to the 2012 gorilla census, there are about 880 mountain gorillas in the wild. Nearly half of the total remaining population estimated to about 440 gorillas live within the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. If you are looking to watch the mountain gorillas in the peak months, you can look for a last-minute deal from local tour operators who can easily secure the permits needed to make your dream safari a reality!

Gorilla tourism is the leading revenue earner among all Uganda’s tourism attractions. Each day, only eight visitors are allowed to visit a gorilla group for a maximum of one hour.
