The public’s outcry over continuous phone messages advertising for free call promotions has prompted Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to ban telecom companies from sending any more unsolicited SMS.

According to UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi, all the telecom companies should not send any more of these messages until they fully comply with a certain set of guidelines set by the regulatory body.

All the telecom companies have been ordered not to admit new subscriptions for such promotions. The ban will be reviewed only after the service providers comply with the conditions set.

“In a bid to improve the quality of service and the quality of experience that consumers of communications services in Uganda receive, UCC has with immediate effect suspended all new promotions offered by licensed operators with respect to mobile communication services,” read a statement by UCC.

“The move is intended to improve the network connection which is currently congested with free calls promotions,” UCC communications officer Fred Otuunu said.

Mr Isaac Kalembe, the UCC’s Public Relations Officer added that they have drafted guidelines that they have been discussing with telecoms.

This is after, several people started complaining that their money is deducted whenever they receive these junk SMS, and they warned the telecoms but nothing was done.

“So last week, we wrote to them giving them June 6 as a deadline,” Kalembe said.

AfDB Approves $109m To Improve Road Access for Tourism

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) approved a loan of $109 Million to give to Uganda to improve road access to socio-economic facilities and quality of transport service levels in south-western and eastern parts of Uganda.

The money will be used to upgrade the Rukungiri-Kihihi-Ishasha/Kanungu and Bumbobi-Lwakhakha roads from gravel to bitumen standard.

The Board of Directors of AfDB approved the loan to support the realization of the National Development Plan (NDP) and Uganda’s Vision 2040.

AfDB’s director of the Department for Transport and Information and Communication Technologies Amadou Oumarou says the project will improve standards of living of the beneficiaries, support the tourism industry and promote regional integration and cross border trade with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Kenya.

He said this presenting the project to the Bank’s board of directors.

“With this project, the African Development Bank is addressing a pressing demand for the provision of good quality and reliable transport infrastructure needed by Uganda for its socio-economic development and poverty reduction agenda,” said Oumarou.

He added that theexpected project outcomes are reduction in transport costs; increased mobility; improved access to economic and social facilities; provision of clean water to households; and increase in income of women vendors in the roadside markets.

The upgraded roads will also support cross border trade and regional integration by linking western Uganda with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and eastern Uganda with Kenya at the border of Ishasha and Lwakhakha respectively. The roads will also support the tourism activities at Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP) and Mount Elgon National Park.

The project conforms to the key development policies of the AfDB and its assistance strategy to Uganda.  It is in line with the AfDB’s 2011-2015 Results Based Country Strategy Paper (CSP) that focuses on infrastructure for development and increased agriculture productivity.

The CSP is closely aligned to the NDP that includes infrastructure as one of the five pillars. This is in line with the Bank’s Ten-Year Strategy (2013-2022), which prioritizes support to infrastructure development as one of the key areas for the AfDB’s future assistance.

Kats on Sunday revealed to UGO that he had officially taken up managing of Uganda’s former Big Brother Africa contestant, Sharon Nalukenge also known as Sharon O.

He said he believes Sharon can sing good music that’s why he signed her to his I Love Music (ILM) label.

Sharon O, a former member of the defunct dance cum singing group obsessions has been trying since her departure from the Big Brother house to make a mark in Uganda’s Music Industry but in vain.

After several unsuccessful attempts, Sharon O ventured into Bar business, opening up a bar in Nalya named Blu Ice Bar. But it seems she still believes she can sing and Kats is the person to make her to achieve her dream.

Why Jamaican Musicians Still Perform In Uganda

0

Jamaican singer Dermarco had wonderful show a few weeks ago, with hundreds of revelers attending. This was his second time in the country after his disastrous trip to the Banana Republic.

However, he is not the first Jamaican musician to perform in the country more than once. Neither is he the first foreign musician to perform in the country more than once. There has been a series of mainly Jamaican singers like Shaggy, Sean Paul, Elephant Man, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Konshens, Busy Signal and Mr G performing in Uganda more than once.

But the hardest question that lingers in the minds of Ugandans is: Why is it always the Jamaicans that perform in Uganda? This is because most of the foreign artists that have performed here have been from the Caribbean Island, with Nigeria, South Africa being the other musical imports.

However, with the recent leaked list of the fees some of the world’s favorite bands and pop stars charge for a concert appearance, the question has been partly answered. According to the leaked list, it may take years to have a Rihanna or a Black Eyed Performance here! Unlike Jamaican singers who are even paid as low as Shs50m to hold a concert here, the average charges of the world pop stars and bands range between Shs625million-1.25billion. And others even go beyond this to 1.875 billion.

With the above charges, I think the reason can be guessed. Although the artistes are paid meager fees for the concerts, the public still find it hard to afford a ticket and this has been witnessed on several occasions with some international artists singing for a semi-empty, with notable flop concerts being that of Sisqo, Demarco and Davido.

The biggest paid for concert in Uganda was that of the UB40 in 2008 which was paid for by the largest telecommunications provider in the Country, MTN. But according to sources who were associates in bringing the legendary band into the country, the charges were nowhere near to Shs600m.

Some singers like Elephant Man was paid Shs 50m for his concert in 2011. There are even others that have been paid less than this!

According to the leaked list, artists; Adele, Rihanna, No Doubt, Pink, Shakira, Black Eyed Peas, Faith Hill, Cold Play and Kanye West charge an amount 1.875 billion.

But there are some like Justin Beiber, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and James Taylor charge a whooping Shs 2.5billion per show. If the prices are to stay this way, then we have to wait longer to have a Madonna or Justin Timberlake performance in Uganda. Above all if they were to come, would you attend?

As you read this, another Jamaican artist, Busy Signal is set to come into the country in October. It is not the first time he is here, having performed in Kampala last year. However unlike when some local artists and musicians spoke out against foreign musicians performing in the country, at least now they can go watch the show comfortably, having got the reason behind their coming!
