Shisha in Uganda

Shisha smoking health risks not only include heart disease, respiratory problems, lung and mouth cancer, but also risks of transmitting diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis.

Most of the Shisha tobacco is scented making it hard for smoker to realize that they are smoking tobacco. Unlike regular tobacco products shisha tobacco comes with a variety of flavors that disguise the tobacco smell. These include apple, mint, and strawberry.

Because of these sweet flavors addition many young people are attacked to it. It has no health warning like cigarettes even though them the cigarettes need pictorial warning.

In every single session shisha smokers inhale up to 200 times more smoke than they get from a cigarette smoke.

Smoking shisha exposes the person to toxins coming from the chemicals of water pipes.

And also know tobacco smoking affects pregnancies leading to per-mature births, low birth weights and sometimes babies are born dead.

Shisha smoking can pass on bacteria and viruses like herpes through the use of pipes which are believed to never be sterilized.

Smoking Shisha is addictive as it appears the physical and psychological dependence on nicotine that occurs in cigarette smoking are the same.

There are also studies that show that using a water pipe can increase infectious disease transmission and there can also be more dental problems. The metals in the pipes don’t appear to be a problem but it’s the metals in the smoke. There are much more metals found in shisha than found in cigarettes.

The rampant appearance of shisha in different places is a sign that more people are trying it and whatever the reasons for recruiting and continuous use of the product has social effects that have big impacts to lives of the different people who smoke it and non smokers.

These are seen the different circles of family and friends, in finding romance, in the application of jobs, public places… you should know humans are social being and can’t live alone.

For a potential lover shisha smoking can be a turn off because smokers tend to have wrinkled skins and may appear physically less attractive and weak, this is due to the decrease in blood supply to the major parts of the body like the skin. This makes smokers look older. Plus their clothes tend to smell the scent from shisha. It should be known that some people are allergic to tobacco smoke and will keep their distance from smokers.

Also as already known tobacco smoking can interfere in the sexual performance, and shisha which is 200 times more than a cigarettes has more effects. It causes sexual dysfunction in males and in females it reduces fertility, causes miscarriage and increases risk of losing babies to sudden infant death syndrome plus all the other oral transferred diseases.

If the tobacco control bill is passed and implemented which I pray it is, shisha smokers will be illegal in Uganda. If you are found smoking in places that are considered smoke free you would have to pay a fine that will dig a hole in your pockets.

Shisha smoking losses you friends who can’t take your lung burning habits anymore. These are mainly those who are considered about their health. You don’t want to chase your friends and family members away because of a habit you can control and stop.

Did you know you lose your sense of smell and taste when you smoke tobacco either shisha or cigarettes? The toxins and tar in the tobacco can dull the taste bud which leads to reduced enjoyment of food.

And lastly, one long term consequence of smoking shisha is increased dependency and this can affect your work performance because you need a smoking break. This in some smoker has caused smokers to experience struggles in finding suitable job employment.

That was the time he formed the defunct ‘Peace for All, all for Peace’ pressure group that was aimed at neutralizing the boiling anger within Ugandans who were angry with members in government.

Mayinja, notwithstanding, is resolute that his crossing was spurred by his rejection of Bobi Wine’ s political philosophies. He encourages Bobi Wine to regard and respect his choices.

Daudi Kabanda

Kasambya legislator Hon Daudi Kabanda while appearing on one of the mainstream media political talk shows last evening pegged the ongoing hate speech circulating on social media on the Kyagulanyi led National Unity Platform which he says are using hate as a tool to pursue their political motives.

According to Kabanda, known members of the Kamwokya based party have for long used social media to attack, demean and defame people not sparing highly respected people in society like the Kabaka of Buganda , Nabagereka and religious leaders.

Kabanda said the Nnabagereka of Buganda, who has never uttered a single word about Ugandan politics, was in Boston, and she was attacked by people who are known to be strong supporters of NUP.

He also cited another example on how Kyuma Kya Yesu physically assaulted Hon Simeo Nsubuga during the age limit tensions on one of the buganda traditional ceremonies.

Kabanda also pointed fingers at Fred Lumbuye a NUP Turkey based propagandist who is fond of declaring people dead and accusing government of being behind their killings.

Kabanda says leaders in NUP are half baked and a reflection of their political immaturity. He futher adds that this is why they are plotting against dumping Hon Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba as the Leader of Opposition because he behaves in a diplomatic way rather than radicalism as the NUP Principal Bobi Wine would have preferred.

He further added that during the reign of Dr Kizza Besigye, there was nothing like such dimwitted behaviors by his supporters as it is today under Kyagulanyi whose followers donot spare any one.

Torture in Uganda

Mohammad Kiriggwajjo, a boda boda cyclist and resident of Mutundwe is nursing severe wounds on his right arm after allegedly being abducted and tortured by unknown gunmen last month.

According to Kirigwajjo, the reason for being tortured is because of his support for the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

Mr. Kiriggwajjo contends that on October 5 as he walked to his home at around 8pm, men armed with guns grabbed him and forced him into a Toyota Noah, which he had earlier noticed to be without number plates.

“I was driven to an unknown destination. They asked me to explain why I support the opposition, in particular NUP. My fingers were hit with a rod, which I assumed to be a hammer. One plucked off my nails as the other peeled off the finger skin,” he added.

“Those who tortured me cautioned me against reporting to police or taking the issue to the media, but now I have no alternative and I need people’s help. I have spent more than Shs500,000 on medication. I also have a family to look after yet all my savings are done,” Mr Kiriggwajo said.

He added: “I feel a lot of pain in the stomach, back and the chest, my bladder can no longer hold urine for longer and sometimes I pass out urine mixed with blood. I keep asking myself, is it a crime to support National Unity Platform?”

Kirigwajjo joins a list of other people who have tasted the wrath of unidentified gunmen after being abducted and these include, Alexandria Marinos, who said to have been tortured for playing Bobi Wine’s songs in April 2022, Yasiin Busulwa of Nakawa, Samuel Masereka from Kasese and Cyrus Kasaato of Kyebando.

“Don’t write about Parliament,”Among warns Daily Monitor

Anita Among

The speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among has sternly warned the Daily Monitor Newspaper following a recent screaming headline that indicated that Parliament through its commission had secretly increased the salary of legislators by at least 40%.

Speaking during plenary yesterday, a visibly angry Among strongly cautioned Daily Monitor to desist from writing about ‘what you do not know.’

“I saw a headline from Daily Monitor claiming we have increased salary. I want to warn Daily Monitor. Don’t write about Parliament,” she asserted. “If you do not have what to write, just don’t write what you do not know. There’s a difference between salary and pension. What we had increased is pension, not salary as reported,” she added.

The ploy of having the Parliament welfare elevated was reportely quashed by President Museveni who disagreed with the idea citing economic challenges as the country has even borrowed from private banking entities a whooping 4 Trillion to facilitate the budget.

Some sources inside parliament revealed to this Newspaper that days after Among’s plan to increase salaries was foiled, she and the Parliamentary Commission opted to procure a fleet of Toyota Landcruiser V8 series vehicles that were to be shared to all members of the Commission Secretariat, Govt whip, the speaker’s chambers and the Leader of Opposition.

MP Basalirwa Narrates Relationship with Among

0
Asuman Basalirwa

Bugiri Municipality lawmaker Hon. Asuman Basalirwa has opened up on why he opted to court the speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among, in order to be in her good books and avoid any likely squabbles with her.

According to Basalirwa who was interviewed by one of the leading newspapers, Parliament is not a platform for political activism but rather, a lobbying forum that all lawmakers must take advantage of.

The JEEMA president intimates that for one to succeed in Parliament and be granted time to present ideas on the floor, that MP must be in good terms with the speaker of Parliament Anita Among. Basalirwa dissents from the stand of some defiant MPs like Zaake Francis Butebi whose ideology is allegedly ‘extremist’ in nature.

“We all come here for service delivery,” Basalirwa says. “If you want the views of your people worked upon then don’t clash with the speaker,” he adds.

The same approach has been adopted by NUP MPs under the G-20 force headed by the leader of opposition Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba. All NUP MPs in the G-20 are of the diplomatic school of thought which is why they are very keen on what they say before the media.

Meanwhile a source in the office of the speaker says Basalirwa’s relationship with Among is all about the law and constitutionalism. The source says it is Basalirwa who mentors Among and teaches her matters concerning the law and the rules of procedure. However in return according to the source, Basalirwa is given hordes of opportunities including financial and travel allowances.
