Lacrosse as a Potential Tourism Gold Mine

0

This is a matter of great national importance that deserves your urgent attention!

In 2017, my political science professor and former CIA agent in Charge of the African desk, Dr Daniel Young, gave me the assignment to investigate how baseball, a traditionally white game crossed the US border. Young had read a story about baseball in Rwanda. My findings were that a Rwandan went to Colombia University and loved baseball while there. He decided to introduce it in his country.

Just recently, Uganda hosted BBC Olympic broadcaster, Rob Walker, who enjoyed an incredible tour of the country.

Walker went viral after complimenting Uganda during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after Ugandan athlete Peruth Chemutai won gold (women’s 3000metre steeplechase) and also commented when Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei won 10,000 meters at the world championship, and Jacob Kiplimo won two medals at the Commonwealth games.

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) arranged for Walker to pay a visit and explore the country. Walker spent 11 days in Uganda and his visit was covered by the local and international press. That is the power of sports!

Of football (soccer) lovers who follow English Premiership (EPL), many have never been to the UK. Still, they know almost every UK city, the distances, and the surroundings only by following their beloved UK-based teams. That’s how the UK was successfully able to market the country by promoting the game of football and inviting investors. These days, there is a competition of American and Arab billionaires compete to own English football clubs.

Any Government that is not investing in sports is missing a big opportunity and Uganda is precisely in this situation. The way sports are managed in Uganda is a sad story. Clubs can’t compete internationally for lack of funds, there is no sports infrastructure to talk of; currently, the national football team has no stadium to host home games. Where is the problem?

In 2014, Uganda became the first African country to participate in the World Lacrosse Championships in Denver, Colorado, USA. In 2018, they participated in their second World Lacrosse Championships in Israel. For both of these games, their qualification was automatic, and not “mathematical” as it is usually in football.

In November last year, they made history when they beat Kenya by one point in triple overtime, 9-8, becoming the first African nation to qualify officially for the World Lacrosse Championships due in June this year in San Diego, California. But how have these accolades been harnessed to market Uganda and earn big to supplement other sources of foreign exchange and to create opportunities for young, hopeful people?

As we talk, there is a risk of the national team missing out on the San Diego games. Reason? Lack of funding and other necessary support!

Participating in the Championships would be an experience of a lifetime for players, providing an opportunity for young men who have most probably never travelled outside of their home country to represent Uganda on the world stage. Travelling abroad and training/playing at such a high level will have a lifelong impact on these athletes.

It will provide an opportunity to expand the sport in Uganda. International competitions garner a lot of interest and attention, encouraging players to train hard, and capturing the attention of a new generation of players in Uganda.

Hon. Peter Ogwang, the State Minister for Sports, this is your time to shine by standing with this great team with a surprising record of excellent yet uncelebrated performance! I have seen you with our athletes at international games and I think you are fit to see more success during your term. Consider Lacrosse as your next grand job as Minister.

There are partners out in the world reaching out for the cause of Lacrosse through crowdfunding, and such gestures need special recognition for the love they have for Uganda and its people. One of them is World Lacrosse, a US-based nonprofit organization serving as the fiscal sponsor for the Ugandan Men’s National team. Thanks to those who have contributed so far!

There is also the African Association of Lacrosse (AAL) founded in 2021 to support the growth of the game across the face of Africa. Uganda has a chance to be the giant of Lacrosse in Africa and make use of international tournaments to invite the world to “Explore Uganda” and attract more “Bob Walkers” to grow the value of Uganda’s endowments and talents on the world market. That’s worth a lot more than gold.

Yours Sincerely,

Godwin Agaba ( is a Ugandan American ,a diehard fan of Manchester United .From Ohio, USA. Manchester United eliminated Barcelona from Europa after two days won the English League cup and it’s on verge of winning the EPL, FA and Europa.

UgandaDecides: Was Blocking Social Media Really A Wise Move?

0
Social Media is Blocked in Uganda

According to Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), social media was mainly blocked to regulate wrong dissemination of information – especially information centered on the ongoing elections. The responsible authorities were worried that some people would misuse social media by “telling lies.” Mobile money transactions were also paused. Apparently, some people were bribing others through mobile money.

Unfortunately, there was no prior announcement that these services would be unavailable at some point. Nevertheless, most people found a way to access social media anyway. If you follow that hashtag #UgandaDecides, you will be amazed.

Yes, UCC had its reasons; but how about the other Ugandans that use social media for other purposes aside from political interests? How about other Ugandans that had businesses to conduct, journeys to make, services and products to pay for; and were hoping to use mobile money, but were put at a standstill without any prior knowledge? Was this put this into consideration?

Right now, one cannot undermine the power of social media when it comes to business. Social media is a powerful marketing tool. For businesses that depend on social media marketing and advertising, wasn’t the move unfair to them?

Booking a car

When renting a car its better you confirm the vehicle with some month. Several travelers opting to rent a car have faced challenges of renting a car on last minute. Vehicles are not always available, they’re always in the field and placing your booking makes it simple to have your car selection separated for that date. It’s important also when booking a car rental you make a deposit as your car rental agency may suggest. Some rental agencies suggest 30% and other 20% of the total rental. This is a commitment that you’re ready to take your rental and your handler is automatic forced to keep your vehicle available in a perfect mechanical condition on the date suggested.

Making payments

Payments are always made in dollar, following the deposit made when confirming your rental. The rest of the balance is paid on the last date, this means you should walk around with cash money. And most of the payments you will make as you drive will be in cash, spare yourself with some cash around.

Driving

In Uganda we drive on the left hand side of the road. Make some imagination practices when not used to the left side driving. You must have a valid driving license and for foreign travelers should have a valid international driving license. Any driver must be ages 18 and above, try as possible to observe traffic rules. However, driving in Uganda is not difficult and complicated, but the other road users makes it a point to have be vigilant whenever seated behind the wheels.

What extra costs is paid

Though almost all working policies suggest that you have to leave some extra money in the office. The only things that remain is maybe your passport and driving license copies. There is no charge of extra charges, for case of accidents. When an incident happens when driving, then the police should investigate the matter, and communicate to your operator for the way forward. But in all not extra cost are charge leaving other factors constant.

Pick up and Drop off

In most cases, car rental services in Uganda are offered at free of charge of car delivery to their clients in areas around Kampala and Entebbe. Further than that you have to meet some costs of fuel and driver to deliver your vehicle. Car rental pick-up in most cases is done at Entebbe International Airport upon your arrival or at your communicated lodge, hotel or apartment. And the same applies to drop off, we suggest that you communicate before drop off so that you deliver the vehicle to our representative. There is also no charge when drop off is done in areas around Kampala and Entebbe.

About insurance

The car rental are already insured and you don’t need to buy the car insurance. All rental cars have both third party and comprehensive insurance. The third party caters for people and damages made outside of the vehicle when the car caused an accident. Then the comprehensive covers damages on the vehicle. The insurance doesn’t cover people inside the vehicle, but you can ask your home insurance providers if they can give you that traveling insurance. But you don’t need to buy extra insurance. However, when your car rental involves crossing borders, then you will have to buy the COMESA insurance at the border. So, for this case when planning to cross borders you have to notify your rental agency in time and pay the extra $50 to purchase you the COMESA insurance.

Road assistance services

Most operators have the 24 hours car rental road assistance in case the car rental has gotten some challenges. Car rental are always kept in the perfect mechanical condition to ensure that travelers cruise unconditionally. These are vehicle and any time breakdown may occur, the office and contact person’s number are perfect places to give assistance. The car rentals used in Uganda are a bit not complicated and there mechanics across who can help handle situations. Don’t do any repair on the vehicle before informing your handler.

Difference between long and short term rental

The long term rental means travelers taking a car rental for 30 days and above have a special arrangement of rental. Sometimes these rental arrangement can cut even up to 10% discount. And short term rental is the normal rental and in most case it doesn’t attract any grant. For travelers hiring a vehicle for longer time means these must get at least a special treatment. When want best discounted offers sometimes they come with long term arrangements. Also long term rental can apply to travelers taking about 5 vehicles at once and for a period of not less than 20 days.

Masaka Court Grants Bail to MPs Ssegirinya & Ssewanyana

0
Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana

After spending almost 17 months in Jail, the opposition legislators from National Unity Platform Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana on Monday were granted bail.

Allan Ssewanyana, the Makindye West MP and his Kawempe North counterpart, Muhammad Ssegirinya finally secured bail. The Masaka High Court Resident Judge, Lawrence Tweyanze granted the two legislators temporary do their trials outside the prison.

The two legislators have been on remand for allegations of attempted murder, murder, and terrorism following their arrest on September 7th, 2021.

The dual attended court via video link from Kigo prisons, then applied for bail through their lawyers Caleb Alaka, Medard Ssegona, and Erias Lukwago on grounds of ill health.

Before the Judge made the ruling, Richard Birivumbuka, the Masaka Resident Chief State Attorney on behalf of the Director of Public Persecution-DPP asked to withdraw their affidavits that sought to challenge the legislator’s earlier bail applications.

He told the court that the DPP had instructed him not to further object to the bail application and asked the court to set very stringent conditions for the legislators to ensure that they don’t disrupt their trial. Biribimbuka withdrew the affidavits sworn by Jenipher Amumpaire and Thomas Jatiko, both Assistant Directors of Public Prosecution and Innocent Mubangizi, a police detective, who had earlier expressed fear that the MPs would use their status to interfere with the prosecution and threaten prosecution witnesses.

In the earlier bail applications, the state had told the court that the two Members of Parliament were likely to compromise the ongoing investigations because some of their accomplices are still at large. However on Monday, Birivumbuka told the court that they are no longer opposed to the bail application. He presented to court a certificate of no objection by the DPP, indicating that it was issued based on the critical health condition of the two MPs.

He prayed that court asks that the accused persons deposit their passports with the court and are bonded with substantially heavy amount of money in cash and commit to return to the court whenever needed. The other conditions include, not leaving the country with leave of the High Court and non-interference with state witnesses.

While giving his ruling Lawrence Tweyanze granted the accused person’s cash bail of Shillings 20 million each, and granted the prayers of the state, except for restricting the legislators from moving out of the country. The court also bonded each of the legislator’s sureties including Kalungu West MP, Joseph Ssewungu, Masaka City Mayor Florence Namayanja, Former Lubaga North MP, Moses Kasibante, and Kawempe Division Councilors Thomas Bagonza, Shillings 50 million not in cash.

Justice Tweyanze ordered the MPs to report to the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala once every month. However, Elias Lukwago, one of the accused’s lawyers expressed dissatisfaction with the high bond fees.

Lukwago further said that it was unfair for the court to ask for an additional Shillings 20 million from the MPs without considering the fees they earlier deposited with the same court.

“In the earlier bail application after which our clients were rearrested, they had paid cash of 20 million Shillings, which we expected the court to carry forward. Given the long time they have been in jail, these MPs don’t have this money,” he argued shortly after the ruling.

The prosecution alleges that the two MPs physically participated and conspired with other people to execute machete murders in Greater Masaka with the intent to intimidate the public for political, religious, social, or economic gains.

They are also facing charges of terrorism and aiding terrorism, which they allegedly coordinated between January and August 2021 in the greater Masaka sub-region.

Radio Station Employees at Minister Baryomunsi Dispute Over $3

0

After a business commission went south, Nelson Twinamatsiko, the radio station manager of Kanungu FM, got into a fight with Anita Tumuramye, also known as Anita Rose.

The two, both employees of the station run by Minister Chris Baryomunsi, were seen on camera grappling to the ground there.

Twinamatsiko is seen standing over Anita Rose in the video, twisting her arms as she rolls on the ground to try to regain her balance while also refusing to let go of whatever object is concealed in her tiny palm. The video has since gone viral on social media.

Anita Rose’s animal print short dress restricts her ability to move freely throughout the fight, however Twinamatsiko’s never-say-die mentality makes him entirely unconcerned with the risk of undressing his coworker.

Coworkers are leaned over and yawning a good distance away from the two, appealing for Twinamatsiko to call a timeout.

They keep yelling “Manager, Manager” at him, but neither he nor Anita Rose will tap out. Instead, she actually recovers her feet, and the round continues.

According to sources, the station’s acquisition of the company that brought in a $3 (shs12,000) commission that Anita Rose was fast to claim and choose put the two coworkers in this situation.

Twinamatsiko acted quickly after becoming aware of the situation, ordering Anita Rose to immediately give up the commission. When Anita Rose refused, there was an argument, and eventually a brawl broke out.

After the fight, Anita Rose was consequently suspended.

Biden Invites Museveni for 2nd US-Africa Summit

Museveni to Meet Biden

About 45 African Heads of State, including Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni have bee invited by US President Joseph Biden to attend the second US-Africa Leaders’ Summit which is slated for December 13-15 2022 in Washington, DC USA.

The 49 African leaders, and the African Union Commission chairperson, Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat were all given invitations.

However, African countries where the military seized power through coups have not been invited to attend the summit. These include Mali, Sudan and Burkina Faso which were not invited by President Biden.

The agenda for the second US-Africa summit, US State Department officials will focus on peace and security, climate change and food security on the continent.

“We expect some of the outcomes to be deepening and expanding reflection of our long- term US-Africa partnership while we advance our shared priorities to amplify African voices,” said Mr Robert Scott, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs.

The three-day summit is a follow-up of the first summit in August 2014 convened under the President Barack Obama administration.

Mr. Scott added that the summit is geared at re-calibrating US-Africa relations under the prevailing geo-political conditions.

“We are looking at complementing our relationship. The world we are living in now is different from 2014,” he noted.

The first-day of the summit will include back-to-back forums for different themes from African-diaspora, peace and security, and governance, among others. Day two is scheduled for the US-African business forum to explore investment opportunities on the continent.

Ms Dana Banks, the National Security Council senior adviser for the summit, said they have also invited civil society actors, youth groups and youth leaders, in the back-to-back forums.

Earlier on in March, the chairperson of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Mr Robert Menendez, and petitioned Mr Biden to lock Mr Museveni out of the meeting on account of the Kampala regime’s deteriorating human rights record.

However, visiting US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield revealed in May that they engage with all leaders with whom they differ in opinions.

The United States gives Uganda nearly $1 billion dollars each year, mainly for health and security support.
