NFA Official Arrested for Assaulting an Indian Investor in Kikuube district

0

Police in Kikuube district yesterday arrested one Ayebare Joseph, a senior official working with National Forestry Authority (NFA) attached to Bugoma forest for assaulting an Indian investor RAEHA RAMASAMY KRSHANA. The Indian investor is attached to Hoima Sugar and a farm manager of Nsozi farm where Hoima Sugar has planted over 7 square miles of sugarcane.

Ayebare who was arrested after 3 days, together with some Uganda People Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers attached to NFA forcefully raided Nsozi farm which is under Hoima Sugar and took away 2 trucks loaded with charcoal.

Reliable sources confirm that charcoal was out of the logs which Hoima sugar get after clearing their areas for sugar cane growing not from the forest reserve. Reports say that Ayebare together with UPDF soldiers roughed up the Indian Investor who was accusing them of criminal trespass, saying that the farm is a property of Hoima Sugar and NFA had no right to enter without permission from Hoima sugar.

During the scuffle, the Indian investor got roughed up by a panga yielding Ayebare and group who threatened to harm him badly and took away his phone. The Indian Investor reported the matter to Kikuube police where the case of assault and threatening violence was recorded. Police sources say that 6 witnesses recorded statements all pinning NFA of wrong doing.

A senior police source in Kikuube confirmed the arrest of Ayebare and by the time of filing this story, he was due to appear in Hoima court. “ Its true we arrested him yesterday and the State Attorney already sanctioned his file for court today” a senior police officer said.

When contacted for comment, the RDC Kikuube Mr. Amlan Tumusiime also confirmed the incident and said that he is soon convening a meeting between NFA and Hoima Sugar to ensure that such incidents stop occurring in the area. He further revealed that late last year, Cabinet resolved to open the boundaries of Bugoma forest and neighbourhood to resolve such problems. The Ministry of Lands opened the boundaries but the report is not yet out.

Meanwhile in 2016, the King of Bunyoro Solomon Gafabusa Iguuru leased 22sq miles piece of land to Hoima Sugar for sugar cane growing for a period of 99 years. After the lease, NFA protested claiming that the land in question was the property of NFA under Bugoma Central Forest reserve.

The Kingdom also protested saying that the land in question is known as Kyangwari ancestral land and is among the properties the Central Government returned to Bunyoro Kingdom after the restoration of tradition leaders. Kyangwari is no.5 on the list of the properties returned to the kingdom.

Both NFA, Bunyoro Kingdom and Hoima sugar went to High Court Masindi and the High Court ruled in favor of Bunyoro Kingdom confirming that the land in question belongs to Bunyoro kingdom.

NFA then appealed and again in their ruling, Court of Appeal still ruled in favour of Bunyoro Kingdom. NEMA Later gave a certificate of approval to Hoima Sugar to plant sugar cane on 9.24sq miles. As a result, Hoima Sugar got contractors to do bush clearing where the logs are got and burnt for charcoal which NFA keep claiming.

Researcher Calls for Protection of Nubian Flapshell Turtles

0

Once considered extinct, Africa’s largest soft-shell turtle known as the Nubian Flapshell turtle has made an unexpected comeback in river Nile sections in Uganda’s West Nile and parts of South Sudan.

However, the river shores along Enyau, a tributary of river Nile and along the Nile to Laropi and Dufile near the border to Paanzalla and river Onyama in South Sudan where the turtles have been spotted remain largely unsecured and unprotected.

Dr. Mathias Behangana, a herpetologist and expert on conservation of amphibians and reptile says there is urgent need to protect and conserve such a charismatic species.

“Such a big turtle could be a charismatic species to environment where you had big animals such as white rhinos that have disappeared. It could be used to name places,” he said.

Estimated to be weighing up to 100kg, the Nubian Flapshell turtle would be a revered catch for a village feast and collection for local consumption is suspected to constitute the major threat to the critically endangered turtle.

Planned hydro dam projects, encroachment into habitats by refugees and infrastructure project developers including the Chinese road construction staff who are said to be paying a lot of money to buy such big catch are some drawbacks fueling the threat margins against the turtles.

Dr Behangana said they have documented instance of Bari fishermen in South Sudan who consume the flesh of the big turtle and opportunistic collection of the eggs by pastoralists who graze cattle in the grasslands that form when the Nile waters recede.

The Nubian flapshell turtle is reported to be laying eggs as big as the egg of an ostrich and the researcher says that communities were also eager to sell turtle shells to them during field work at as little as sh30,000.

This is an indication of lack of awareness about the ecological importance of the turtle to biodiversity.

Dr Behangana explained that turtles have huge ecological importance to the wild because as they feed on several things, they manage their own environment.

The turtle could also be a massive boost to the tourism industry if the government focused on its conservation by establishing community conservancies.

“It is not found in a zoo anywhere in the world. Only a few shells in museums in areas where it was once thought to have existed,” he highlighted.

Dr Behangana was speaking during the inaugural science café of the NileWell, a project of the InfoNile aimed at connecting environmental journalists with scientist and researchers.

His presentation hankered on an-ongoing research on the conservation status of the Nubian Flapshell turtle in North-western Uganda and parts of South Sudan.

Funded by the United States Fish and Wildlife Services, Turtle Survival alliance and the Rainforest Trust, Dr Behangana has partnered with Prof Luca Luselli to undertake the first ever research aimed at securing the survival of the species from extinction.
Dr Mathias Behangana, a herpetologist and researcher

He said the turtles are believed to have existed in countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad and Sudan.

By 1996, the turtle was described as near threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list and after over two decades of not seeing any live Nubian flapshell turtle, the listing was updated to extinct.

The classification reversed to critically endangered in 2021 after confirmation by researchers that they found new turtles in 2017.

“In 2017, Prof Luca’s team rediscovered the turtle in South Sudan. He set up a study centre at the University of Juba and then called me,” Dr Behangana told journalists during the online café.

He said from 2021 to 2023, they have pinpointed key spots based on narrations from the community and field sighting to locate the areas with the turtle’s presence.

One such area is Ediofe Bridge on River Enyau in Arua city where locals have told stories of a turtle of that type that was captured and eaten by “Manya” boys a few years ago.

Other sightings were made at the Balala marshes where the river Enyau joins the Nile and around the Laropi/Dufile areas.

Dr Behangana recommended urgent conservation measures possibly including establishing protected areas and measures to manage targeted capture and reduce by-catch in fisheries to protect the turtle.

A Visit To The Crater Lakes In Uganda

0
Crater Lakes of Uganda

Uganda’s beauty is defined by several things, and amazingly, its charm is incomparable. A visit to the Crater Lakes in Uganda is a great opportunity for you to experience its natural beauty. Crater Lakes in Uganda are dotted around the Western part of the country where much volcanic activity took place. The Crater Lake trail introduces you to the country’s most charming Crater Lakes and you will engage in many tourist activities.

The popular locations with Crater Lakes in Uganda include Queen Elizabeth National Park where the Katwe Craters are found, the Kibale/Fort Portal/Kabarole area, and other parts of the Rwenzori Mountains. While on top of these Crater Lakes, you enjoy the breathtaking views of the Rwenzori Mountain ranges, Kichwamba Escarpment, Kibale Forest, and Lake George.

Kasenda Crater Lakes consist of many Craters located on steep volcanic slopes. They are concentrated around the Rwenzori Mountains on the Eastern side and Kibale National Park on the Western part. Kasenda lies in the Kabata village and this area alone features up to 12 stunning Crater Lakes.

On the Crater Lake tour in Fort Portal/Kabarole district, the top Crater Lakes to visit include the Kyaninga Crater Lake. Kyaninga is small in size, but it is one of the most spectacular craters to explore whether on a guide or self drive Uganda safari. This Crater Lake is where Kyaninga Lodge gets its name, one of the luxury accommodation facilities in Fort Portal, Kabarole district. It is a preferred upmarket lodge for guests on chimpanzee tracking tours to Kibale National Park or Crater Lakes tours in Kabarole/Fort Portal area.

Ndali-Kasenda Craters are found close to Kibale National Park, and they can be accessed on foot. They stretch 10km and exist in large numbers. On the Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lake tour, it is also possible to visit the top of the world. The top-of-the-world Crater Lake trail takes 3 hours and you will be guided by an experienced local guide. It offers incredible views of the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon, extensive tea and banana plantations, other Crater Lake, and the lush Kibale Forest.

The Ndali-Kasenda Crater region is comprised of Lake Lyantonde, Lake Nyinambuga (this is also found on Ugandan 20,000-shilling note), Lake Nkuruba, Lake Kifuruka, and Lake Nyabikere.

Katwe Crater Lake

Located on the highest point of Queen Elizabeth NP Mweya Peninsula, the Katwe Crater Lake is one beautiful spot you shouldn’t return without exploring. Enjoy remarkable views of the park and the rift valley, Lake George and Edward, the Rwenzori Mountain ranges, and the Kazinga channel. You can also make a stop visit at the Katwe Salt Lake to explore how salt is locally mined in this area.

There are several inlets to this Crater and no outlets, a reason why its water is salty. The salt solution is concentrated especially during the dry season using an evaporation process. It is during this stage when salt rocks are dried and they can be ready to be sold. The Katwe Lake has a depth of 996 meters and it is salty making it unfavorable to animal life.

The Bunyaruguru Craters

The Bunyaruguru Craters are found on the Western part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Over 20 Crater Lake makes up the Bunyaruguru and this is also mostly referred to as the Kichwamba Crater fields. The most popular of Bunyaruguru Craters is Lake Nkugute and this is found in the Rubirizi district. This derives its name from a Runyaruguru word meaning “swallow.” Myths and ancient stories have been told about this area and there is a belief that every year, this Crater Lake claims the lives of a girl and a boy.

However, this has not been proven. Like most Craters, Lake Nkugute formed due to volcanic eruption activity that occurred around the Bunyaruguru volcanic field, and Kitagata hot springs in the Sheema district are typical evidence of this occurrence. Other Crater Lakes that make up Bunyaruguru include Mirambi, Lake Nkuruba, Lake Kamweru, Lake Kyema, Mafuro, Rwizongo, Katinda, Kamunzuku, Lake Nyungu, and others.

In summary, Uganda is a beautiful destination in Africa where you can explore more than the big five games, or primates such as mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and golden monkeys. Visiting Uganda’s magnificent Crater Lakes offers an unforgettable experience of its own.

Uganda Airlines to Buy six New Planes

Uganda Airlines

Uganda Airline is in the process of adding 6 more aircrafts on its menu of fleet. Three world’s top manufacturers of aircraft are jostling to supply the six aircraft.

Three leading aircraft trio – Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer from Brazil – are said to have submitted their bids to the authorities last week, who also included officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport and Uganda Civil Aviation Authority.

Uganda Airlines is currently using Airbus’ A330-800neo which has a capacity of 257 seats and the 76-seat Mitsubishi CRJ-900.

However, the Uganda national carrier is said to favor planes that have a capacity of 100-plus seats due to the ever-changing passenger numbers on different routes.  However, the six planes will be bought in two installments of three each.

In their meeting with Ugandan officials, Airbus is said to have offered its A321-LR and A321-XLR aircraft, which have capacities of between 180 and 220.

On the other hand, Boeing is said to have offered its B737 Max family. For instance, the Max-7 has a maximum seating capacity of 172 passengers and can travel in a range of 3,850 nautical miles. The Max-8 has a capacity of 220 passengers and can travel in a range of 3,550 nautical miles.

Delegations from the three airline craft manufacturers were in Kampala last week to meet with Uganda Airline and Ministry of Works and Transport, as well as the Civil Aviation Authority.

The 6 planes will be acquired in two bits with two passengers and one cargo plane first and the second bit as well deliver the same.

Healthy Focus: Gastro Intestinal Endoscopy

0
Gastro Intestinal Endoscopy

Upper Endoscopy[ also known as gastroscopy, EGD, or esophago gastro duodenoscopy] is where the doctor uses an endoscope to look at the inside lining of the  esophagus [food pipe], stomach and duodenum [first part of the intestine].A bendable, lighted tube about the thickness of your little finger is placed through your mouth and into the stomach and duodenum.

Why an Upper Endoscopy? To evaluate symptoms of

Persistent upper abdominal pain.

– Nausea.

– Vomiting

– Difficulty swallowing or heartburn or passing dark black stools [Maleana].

It is an excellent method for finding the cause of bleeding from the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is more accurate than the ultrasound or barium swallow for detecting inflammation, ulcers or tumors of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.

It can detect early cancer and can distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous conditions by performing biopsies of suspicious areas. Biopsies are taken by using a specialized instrument to sample tissue.

These samples are then taken to the laboratory to be analyzed. A biopsy can be taken for other reasons and does not necessarily mean that cancer is suspected. A variety of instruments can be passed through the endoscope that allows the doctor to treat many abnormalities with little or no discomfort.

Your doctor can treat you upper gastrointestinal bleeding, stretch narrowed areas or remove swallowed objects. During the upper Endoscopy: you may have your throat sprayed with little a local anesthetic before the test begins and given medication through a vein to help you relax during the examination.

You will be laid on your side or  back in the comfortable position as the endoscope is gently passed through your mouth and into your esophagus, stomach and duodenum.

Air is introduced into your stomach during the procedure to allow a better view of the stomach lining. The procedure usually lasts 10-15 minutes. The endoscope does not interfere with your breathing. Most patients fall asleep during the procedure; a few find it only slightly uncomfortable.

After the Endoscopy

Monitoring in the endoscopy area for 1-2 hours until the effect of the sedative has worn off. One can experience a sore throat for a day or two, may feel bloated immediately after the procedure because of the air that is introduced into your stomach. But will be able to resume diet and take routine medication after the procedure.

What implications can occur?

Endoscopy and biopsy are generally safe when performed by doctors who have had special training and are experienced in these endoscopy procedures.  Complications are rare, but can include bleeding from the site of a biopsy or a tear [perforation] through the lining of the intestinal wall. Blood transfusion are rarely required. A reflection to the sedative can occur. Irritation to the vei  that medications were given is uncommon, but may cause a tender lump lasting a few weeks.

It is important for you to recognize the early signs of possible complications and to contact your doctor if you notice symptoms of difficulty swallowing, worsening throat pain, chest pain, severe abdominal pain, fevers, chills or rectal bleeding of more than one half cup. Without this procedures, one’s symptoms worsen and the doctor will not be able to give you the correct treatment without knowing the correct cause of the problems.

Climate Change in Uganda

Climate Change in Uganda

The work of modern educators is to irrigate deserts not to cut down jungles. “Uganda’s climatic changes have of late manifested class work that we deemed “impossible “during class time. According to Moran Uganda secondary school Atlas, “Uganda experiences four types of climate namely: Equatorial, Montana, Tropical and Semi-Arid.” The semi-Arid used climate, used to cover the smallest percentage in Uganda. Above all odds, it didn’t seem to seize the sinister feeling of desertification in Uganda in a matter of time but some signs have shown up in places like Nakasongola and Kabony. Of recent, the climate has changed drastically. Both wet and dry season has become unpredictable affecting agriculture the backbone of our economy severely.

These changes have been mainly caused by man’s activities on land. To mention, deforestation, industrialization, swamp reclamation and establishment of green houses. These are mainly due to increased demand for energy, timber, economy diversification but severely leaving the soil bare, affecting the absorption of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to pollution. The need for industrialization  has led to emission of poisonous gases like carbon monoxide. These gases also called greenhouse gases, from a ‘blanket’ above the earth’s surface, allowing more UV light from the to penetrate and reach the earth’s surface  thus leading to a raise in temperatures.

This situation can be averted by promoting afforestation, industries should build underground tunnels, where they can emit the exhaust fumes. This will not only prevent depletion of the ozone layer but also reduce the risk of diseases like: asthma, bronchitis and skin cancer. The use of aerosols can also be reduced instead of using a body spray one can opt for a deodorant that is even cheaper and harmless to the environment. Hair sprays can be replaced with different good hair oils that are even harmless to the environment. The government should work hand in hand with Global climate change Alliance, a program founded by the government of Ireland and the Royal Kingdom of Belgium. It has done a commendable job so far in Kiboga, Luweero, Mubende, Nakaseke, Nakasongola and Sembabule districts. They have sensitized people about the different causes of climate change and have provided them with water.

We ought to be modern educators of the young generation, when we are banished from the ace of the earth, we shall be sure to have left a legacy of environment conservation. With extraordinary enthusiasm, we should preserve our environment in the crystal of beauty, the Pearl of Africa.

A Baby in the Womb is a Human Being: Save Life

0
Baby in the Womb

There are many horrible and incomprehensible tales of mothers killing their own children that a week hardly goes without a news of such kind. The culture of death has gripped human society. When these women are arrested, they are imprisoned since  they are a threat to society, however, many still go unpunished.  Whether unborn or not killing is unaccepted. At stage of life, one kills is guilty. Some people theorize that a baby in the womb is just a blob of tissue and not a human being [Gen 2:7]. It is important to note that a human soul  is immortal. The brutality of an abortion towards the child is usually severe and the child feels pain.

The philosophy of legalizing abortion is now manifested into a murder and blood world. For what is expected in a country is which for decades it has been legal for a mother to kill her unborn child? Consider euthanasia, as said,”What goes around, comes around.” The ones passing euthanasia are children born and nurtured  into the society gripped with death. They see no problem with passing a law that permits to ask the doctor assist him/her kill the parent who is very old, terminally ill handicapped. We no longer want inconvenienced;if someone is inconveniencing you, eliminate him/her.Are we surprised then that we live in a world of terrorism?”If a mother can kill her own child, how can we tell others not to kill?”Mother Theresa of Calcutta once asked. If there is no peace between parent and child, how can there be peace in the world? How can we have peace with a stranger?

I am saddened with the activism to legalize abortion in this country.Africans are well known of respecting life, children in the African culture are seen as a gift, a treasure and joy.Life is celebrated not terminated.Let us not be blinded to lose this value that we have.We should continue to treasure family and children.Humanity is the best source for development and hence we need people in order to develop.Fellow Ugandans; let us promote a culture of life “Choose life, then, so that you and your descendants may live,in the love of Yahweh, your God,obeying his voice, holding fast to him,for in this, your life consists”{Deut.30:19-20}.

if there is no peace between a parent and child, how can there be peace in the world? How can one have peace with a stranger?…”
