Bobi Wine Hits Back At Gay Sympathizers, Says Not Intimidated By Threats

0

“I hope that the proponents of Homosexuality that pride themselves in their liberalism and support for human rights, will allow me my right of expression much as they may not be comfortable with my opinion,” reads part of singer Bobi Wine’s statement.

In a statement, which many believe is a reaction about him being denied a visa to perform in the UK, Bobi Wine requests gays and their sympathisers to respect Uganda’s sovereignty status.

“Uganda is a democratic country and I do not make the laws. However, It’s my duty as a Law abiding citizen to adhere to the laws as required by the constitution. A few months ago, the president of Uganda after extensive research and consultation, assented to the anti-homosexuality act and 99% of Ugandans were in support.”
The self styled Ghetto president adds that the sympathisers have misinterpreted the law to mean that Uganda wants to kill homosexuals yet the biggest punishment for the offenders (aggravated homosexuality with a minor where the offender is HIV positive) is life imprisonment and not death.

He further says that the intension of the Act is to stop promotion and exhibition of homosexual practices so as to create standard behaviour for all Ugandans.

“I am personally not out to threaten the life of anyone based on their sexual Orientation. I just DO NOT agree with them. This is my opinion and happens to be that of 99% Ugandans/Africans basing on our culture, religion and constitution.”

“Freedom should not compromise intergenerational equity and human rights should not be an excuse for acts that are counter societal progress.I completely fail to understand the pride and why the gays are so happy about it. If my opinion makes me third world, then am happy to be.”

Bobi Wine goes on to applaud the president for having assented to the law, saying that what the president did was right because it not fair when one tries to “arm-twist” society to legalise bad habits for the sake of aid. “We just can’t compromise our Values and Dignity.”

His statement comes on the foot heels of reports that the singer was denied a visa to perform in the UK, where he was to perform this month.

Since the signing of the bill into law by the president, a number of government officials were June barred from entering the US territories, justifying the action by claiming to be countering violation of human rights.

The US also cancelled a military exercise with the country and cut funds to a number of joint programs.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni February signed the bill that calls for homosexuals to be imprisoned for life. It outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and obligates people to report gays to authorities.

Club Rouge Closed After Tycoons Fight For Ownership

0

The Jinja Road based Club, Rouge has been closed again for the second time this year and renovation is not any of the reasons this time.

The fight for the ownership of the Club is the reason behind the closure of the once biggest night spot in the country.

According to a staff member who has worked under the three different owners of the Club, Rouge was closed as a result of failure to pay rent of the building which houses the it.

This comes amid denials from the Club’s management which last week maintained that they had only closed down because it was a fasting period and there was limited business. But when they failed to open up shop even on Idd day celebrations, the source admitted the club is closed.

The source attributes the Club’s troubles to former owner, suspected internet fraudster, Ronald Muramuzi.

“Muramuzi bought the club from then owner, Spear Abohe at a price of Shs300million in March this year.He went on to renovate it to make it meet the standards of the rest of the top clubs in Kampala. However, Muramuzi was arrested before the club was re-opened,” says the source.

While in jail, he asked to settle some of his creditors out of court and rally ace and city engineer, a one Keneth Ntalo was one of them. Since he owed a lot of money to Ntalo, Muramuzi decided to settle the former with the Club and all the necessary transfers were done while he was still in jail.

However, on coming out of jail, he wants his club back, saying he was forced to sign the transfer papers. He says he is ready to pay back Ntalo’s debts in a period of three months and it is this reason that Ntalo has refused to pay rent.

On his part, Ntalo reportedly says he can’t pay rent for the club that he is to hand over to the owner anytime. He also threatens to drag Muramuzi to court if he fails to pay by the end of the month period.

The Club was closed by city tycoon, Sudhir Repularia, who owns the building. The owners of Rouge reportedly owe him rental arrears amounting to Shs26 million.

How Muramuzi Lost Club Rouge

Muramuzi early this year bought several properties among which included, Club Rouge, Dynasty Newspaper and several buildings with the city.

However, his luck ran out when Telexfree, which he worked for closed down. But as investigations went on, it was discovered that everything was going in his favour until when he was arrested on suspicion of fraud. But during investigations, it was discovered that the scam was actually bigger than Telexfree.

It is alleged that Muramuzi through his companies like; TESCO FREE, Addfast Inc, Telex free, Bank Electro, United Hype League and Massive Ads .Com, he had opened under different names, fleeced money from over 600 people amounting to over Shs4 Billion.

He is currently facing two counts of obtaining Shs500 million from one John Bosco Muhiirwe, the director of Mixed Links, purporting to take youth for jobs abroad.

Muramuza is out of jail on a court bond .

“Stop Harassing, Destroying People’s Property” Museveni Tells UWA, NFA

0

President Yoweri Museveni has warned Uganda Wildlife Authority and National Forest Authority officials against harassing and destroying people’s property through evictions.

President Museveni was speaking to the officials from NEMA, UWA, NFA, Ministry of Water and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, and Office of the Prime Minister at his home in Rwakitura on Wednesday.

Several people have been evicted from prohibited areas especially those living illegally in parks or NFA reserves. The president said that instead of carrying out harsh eviction exercises, they should intensify sensitize programmes and ask them to leave prohibited areas peacefully.

“Just talk to people, the burning of peoples’ manyattas and destroying of their property must stop. Anybody doing so will be held accountable,” Museveni said.

Museveni urged leaders to sensitize and explain to the population living near or in the Uganda game parks the importance of conservation, as animals and forests are useful to human beings.

“The first point is to guide our people. It is not just conserving animals and forests as if you are doing them a favor. It is for survival. The population will fail to know that animals and forests are useful to human beings, for the good of the people. We will be remembered for what type of leadership we give our people. Don’t allow people to destroy catchment areas,” he said.

Leaders from Karamoja sub-region and members of the multi-disciplinary technical team were yesterday presenting their report at his home in Rwakitura, Kirihura district. The task of the team was to analyze land use rationalization between natural recourses conservation, settlement and agricultural development in Karamoja sub-region, following an outcry by communities in the region of harsh eviction by UWA from game reserves and demands to government to de-gazette some land under the protected areas.

The First Lady who is also the Minister for Karamoja Affairs Mrs. Janet Museveni assured the officials that peace and security the NRM government restored in the region, coupled with the drive to increase production for food security, led to the outward migration of communities to their previous homes or to new areas for agriculture.

She added that the general outcry from many communities in Karamoja on the activities of UWA especially in the PIAN-UPE game reserve, led to the constitution of Dr. Limlims’ team whose findings will help in the search of a lasting solution to the problem of rationalizing land use in Karamoja sub-region.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs Ms. Oundo Nekessa, Daudi Migereko of Lands,Housing and Urban Development, Maria Mutagambwa of Tourism and Wild Life, Adolf Mwesigye of Local Government, Bright Rwamirama for Animal Industry, all the MPs, RDCs and LC 5 Chairpersons from Karamoja sub-region.

Uganda to Introduce Cervical Cancer, Diarrhea Vaccines Next Year

0

The Ministry of Health has revealed that vaccines against cervical cancer and diarrhoeal diseases will be introduced in 2015.

The State Minister for Primary Health, Sarah Opendi said the two vaccines will be included in the routine immunisation schedule.

These vaccines will supplement the newly introduced Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) which is being distributed in health centers all over the country.

Last year, Ministry of Health reports stated that at least 2,464 women are dying in Uganda from cervical cancer annually.

Over 3,577 more are diagnosed with the disease which has become Uganda’s leading killer cancer of women.

PACE recently donated 20 sets of equipment called the cryo therapy machines, to be used for early detection and treatment of pre-cancerous cells on the cervix.

Initially, the country had only 15 cryo therapy machines in 14 government referral hospitals and one health centre 4 in Nakasongola.
PACE is an acronym for the Programme for Accessible Health Communication and Education (PACE).

It should be noted that people most at risk of cervical cancer are those who start sexual activity early and those with multiple sexual partners. However, if detected early, it can be prevented.

30,000 to Get Free Power Connections

0

Up to 30, 000 households are to be connected to the electricity grid over the next 12 months ‘free of charge’.
To that end, the World Bank through the Global Partnership on Output–Based Aid programme, has committed a $5.5million (Shs15.2 billion) grant.
Currently, one has to part with Shs98, 000 and Shs326, 000 to get connected for a no–pole and a one–pole service respectively.

The 30, 000 connections will be for households within a 100-metre radius of an electricity pole.
To qualify, households must have been within that radius for the last 18 months and should have done the basic internal wiring of the houses.
Mr Sam Zimbe, the general manager regulatory and corporate affairs of Umeme, the company that will connect the households, said households in Mbale, Tororo, Lira and Gulu would also benefit.

“The areas targeted are upcountry and in the peri–urban areas where potential consumers have not been able to connect to the grid because of affordability issues,” Mr Zimbe told media yesterday. “This programme is aimed at increasing customers numbers. If you connect households, they will move away from using charcoal, which is partly to blame for deforestation.”

According to the National Development Plan (2010/11 – 2014/15), one of Uganda’s development blueprints, access to electricity is 11 per cent compared with 15 per cent in Kenya. The few connections are largely attributed to the inadequate transmission and distribution networks and high end-user tariffs.
Electricity distribution companies such as Umeme, the Bundibugyo Electricity Cooperative Society (BECS), the Pader Abim Community Multipurpose Electricity Cooperative Society Limited (PACMECS), and the Kyegegwa Rural Electrification Cooperative Society are expanding their distribution lines.
On the other hand, the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited is extending the power transmission lines.

The terms
• Households that are wired have to apply to the electricity distribution company to be connected.
• Though they will not pay the connection fees, they are expected to pay for the electricity they will be using.

Mathias Mpuuga Hits Back At Oulanya: How Have You Performed?

0
Hon Mathias Mpuuga

Mathias Mpuuga, the Masaka municipality MP has tasked the deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanya to rate his performance.

“The statements he said were very true. But they were said by the wrong person. He as the person in charge of parliament, how has he performed to blame MPs for the depreciating quality of Parliament? Take an example of a family; if something goes wrong, do they blame children only or even the parent?” Mpuuga Wednesday asked during a political talk show on NBS TV.

“How can he blame MPs when he has been the person who has passed most of the controversial bills? I think he should have weighed his role too; how has he improved or decreased the quality of debate in Parliament.”

He however agreed with the speaker’s statements that the quality of parliament has decraesed. He blamed this on who he called ‘abasubuzi’ (businessmen).

“The electorate have themselves to blame, too. Instead of electing leaders as their representatives, they vote businessmen. Have you ever heard the people I represent complaining that I am not working for them?”

“With due respect to my fellow colleagues (MPs), some are there for money and it is inline how most of the bills have been passed.”

Kabula county Mp James Kakooza, who was also present in the studio agreed to the decline in the quality of paliament but he attributed that to the number of MPs in parliament.

“In the 6th and 7th parliament, the number (of MPs) wasn’t this huge and we had enough time to elaborate on an issue. Each member would be given atleast 5minutes…..but look at today’s parliament, we are given only 2 minutes. This is not enough. Before even you start saying anything, the microphone is cut off,” said Kakooza.

He said that this was because the members are many and almost has to be given the chance to debate.

“The media has also contributed to this. Some MPs since they know that they are being shown on TV. Everyone wants to debate seven if they have nothing to add to the debate; they just want to please their electorates. Before when we were still few, the parliament was very productive.”

However, the Kakooza’s last statement attracted a quick response from Mpuuga who is serving his first term in Parliament.

“How do you say your parliament when you are still few was very productive? You call scrapping presidential term limits productive?” Mpuga asked Kakooza, the man popularly known as Mr Kisanja, for having been the brainchild of the scrapping of presidential term limits.

In 2003, he was instrumental in drumming up support for the amendment of the constitution to lift the term limits.

The campaign later came to pass; effectively ushering in a life presidency in the country.

The two were reacting to Oulanya’s statements made Monday in which he warned that lack of research amongst legislators is hampering the quality of debate in what he referred to as a “huge Parliament.”

Leila Kayondo: I am Light That Turns Every Man Into A Celebrity

0

Ugandan songstress, Leila Kayondo has described herself as light that turns whichever man next to her into an instant celebrity.

“Every time I am near a man, I have to make headlines. Trust me, if I were to move together with any man, I am just that light………I will still make headlines,” said Leilah in an interview that has been posted online.

Leila was trying to refute claims that she and city socialite, Sully Mbugga popularly known as SK Mbugga are in a relationship.

“He (Sk Mbugga) is a man of big status and I am also of ….status. So, when they see two big weapons moving around and doing some things together, they start to make noise. He is young, handsome and has got the money but hey, we are just close, good friends and working partners.”

The Awo singer and the showy tycoon, who owns a fleet of of Hum V cars have been reported to be dating but the pair continues to dismiss the claims saying they are just friends.

However, as this was still hanging, a woman only identified as Fatuma Zalwango, who claimed to be tycoon SK Mbuga’s wife approached media early this year, accusing Leila of stealing her man.

“Where do they steal (men) from? Forests? I did not still any one’s man,” Leila responded in an interview on a local radio station.

Leila currently has three songs with self declared music heavy weight, Jose Chameleon and media reports have it that it is Mbugga who paid Uganda’s biggest musician so he could collabos with Leila.

The earlier songs like; Hooray and Relaxing that they have together have all went on to become mega hits.

Uganda Shilling Continues To Depreciate

0

The Uganda Shilling depreciated further in the week’s trading despite the Central Bank intervening twice in the week, selling US Dollars in an effort to halt the slide.

James Mutuku, the head of financial markets said on July 11 that the interbank market quoted the pair 2665/75 on Friday in the early morning session compared to the previous close of 2635/45.

The move was attributed to a surge in corporate demand plus unattractive yields on Ugandan assets. Interest rates remained largely unchanged with some tightness in the short end as the money market cycle came to an end, Mutuku added.

“Next week we expect the Uganda Shilling to remain on the back foot, trading in the 2640-85 range,” he said, adding the the Central Bank is offering 2 and 5 year bonds in the market and strong investor appetite is expected especially from fund managers, and yields should mostly remain firm.

Lyrical G: Rap in Uganda Nolonger About Positivity, It’s For Money

0

Lyrical G alias Jeff Kintu is one of the pioneers of Hip Hop in Uganda. He was the biggest name in the early 2000s before the likes of Klear Kut, Baboon Forest, Keko and others joined the industry. He’s also a double Pearl of Africa Music award winner. However, the rapper in the recent years has kept a low profile. The Uganda Today caught up with him to find out what he is up to.

You were among the first people to rap in English in Uganda but less has been heard from you. where have you been?

Same old; making music, growing and continuing to make my contribution to the industry. Is that what you refer to as less has been from me? I have always put up an album every yr and I am still one of the names mentioned whenever authentic hip hop in Uganda is brought up. Fatherhood is the other thing that has taken up my time, But primarily music is the main thing.

What do you have to say about the of hip hop music trend in Uganda?

Look at where we have come from…When I first came out as a rapper in English, they said English rappers wouldn’t get far. Now we got artistes signed to different labels…what can I say apart from saying I was among the first ones to do it.

Why is it that new entrants are having the biggest share of the industry than the pioneers?

I think it has a lot to do with tastes and  preferences. The newer rappers follow the YMCB trend and others in the same line which their peers are stuck on while the folks in my age group are into a different sound/style altogether. But the biggest reason is that the rap game in the country isn’t about the fundamentals anymore; lyricism, consciousness, positivity, awareness, etc.  it is more about money and things that the younger generation are fascinated with.

So, should we expect a change of style from you, so as to suit the current revered style?

I will never compromise my style irrespective of the changes in the industry. I’ve always believed that realness was about staying true to what you believe in. Hip hop to me is much more than rapping It’s deeper than rap! I think you see that in my music. it was never about acquiring wealth but  rather to preach good to the people.

There are so many feuds in the music industry but you haven’t been reported in any, what is your trick?

To many artistes, I’m looked at me as their elder brother and thus they respect me to a certain degree. I would d rather maintain peace than engage in a senseless feud with so and so. Besides, I am too grown for all that and I got a lot of other things to pursue.

Who are some of the biggest names you have worked with?

I worked with South Africa rapper Proverb on a song for a documentary, Squoggy Bear from California, Typical Fefe & Tyonne from Barbados, Outrageous Records in South Africa and other indie acts in UK, Tanzania and Canada.

That sounds quite a number of foreign artists, where do you produce your songs from?

I have worked with a lot of producers at various studios; Steve Jean, Dawoo, Aydee, Benon, Lamara,GK, Yego, Urban Aksent and Uncle Denno.

Actually my new album was entirely produced by myself and recorded it at Audio Central Productions in Ntinda.

Where do you see the Hip Hop industry in the next 5 years?

The next 5 years are going to be hectic in industry. A lot of acts are coming up and people are starting to pay attention to quality. I see a lot of acts struggling to state their case because of poor quality releases. It will only those that making quality music who will benefit.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years.

10years from now, I see myself still involved in the music industry, either as an artiste, producer or music label head…music is, and will always b part of my life.

What is your advice to aspiring rappers?

My advice to any1 aspiring to become a rapper is stay true to yourself and the game (hip Hop). Pray and work hard because nothing comes easy!

I think even participation in competitions of any kind are good as they expose talent. End Of Da Weak and Nokia Don’t Break The Beat have helped several rappers come to the forefront. Through such competitions, younger rappers have been able to travel the world to compete on the big stage.

Any last words……….

Yeah, like I said, I release an album every year and this year is no different. Be on the lookout for my 8th studio album ‘Feel Good Music’ coming out any time from now. Go pick a copy of my new album Feel Good Music in stores July 2014.

Support good Ugandan hip hop music…GMC is a movement.

M-Pigs Youth: Our Work Is Not Yet Done

0
Yellow Pigs Uganda

The Jobless Brotherhood of Uganda who are now known as the M-Pigs Youth for snucking two piglets in parliament marked MPigs said that they work is not yet done.

Norman Tumuhimbise and Robert Mayanja who are member of this group were arrested for the stunt, and released several weeks later on bail. The pair has since been re-arrested for illegal assembly under Uganda’s Public Order Management Act.

The brotherhood that says represents millions of desperate and unemployed Uganda youth runs on a rally cry that goes “Don’t lead us into temptation,” that carries the veiled threat of violence.

On June 17, the two young men snuck two piglets, painted yellow, wearing signs saying “M-Pigs,” the piglets managed to get as far as the parliamentary chambers before being stopped by police. The pigs, says Tumuhimbise, are symbols of political corruption and greed.

“Besides a hyena, some other most greedy animal is a pig. When it gets hungry and greedy, it just eats its piglets,” he said. “These MPs are eating us alive. We have those of us who read Animal Farm. In this country we have so many Napoleons and Snowballs now, either in opposition or in government. These are national M-Pigs who are sitting in that house.”

The piglets were confiscated as evidence. Police later claimed they were testing the animals for terrorism-related material and after were supposed to be sold at an auction though the young men want their pigs back.

“These are our pigs. This is our envelope where we always package our message. These are our delivery boys, and by the way they did us proud, because they delivered the message very well. I think they deserve another turn,” said Tumuhimbise.

Tumuhimbise and Mayanja say that despite the charges against them, their activism is far from over. Their next step, they say, will be to hold a youth convention in Kampala.
