On the 11th of March 2020, the Uganda National Roads Authority Executive director Allen Kagina hosted the Uganda National Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors at the UNRA offices in Kyambogo during a one day seminar that discussed a number of challenges faced by local contractors and how to promote them.
UNRA promised to review a number of bidding processes and payment conditions for local construction companies’ in order to give them a fighting chance amidst the stiff competition they face with rival giant contractors.

The timely initiative couldn’t have come sooner as several local contractors have often lost bids to much larger co-operations leaving them struggling or out of business. The initiative to ear mark or ring fence particular contracts specifically for local contractors will greatly level the playing field for Ugandans within the industry.
Some of the contracts ring-fenced for local contractors will include: i) Merchandised maintenance of unpaved and paved roads. b) Periodic maintenance of paved and unpaved national roads. c)Low Volume sealed roads (LVSR) d) Swamp improvements and last but not least e) selected Bridge works.
