MP Katuntu Attacked, Reports say

Bugweri county MP Abdu Katuntu is said to be nusing setrious injuries after he was allegedly beaten by a group of rowdy who also left his car to near scrap.

An eye witness, one Khalid Kirunda, told local media that the MP arrived at Kikunu Village in Igombe Sub-county at around 7pm to multitudes of waiting youths.

As soon as he disembarked his car to handover tents he had gone to deliver, the rowdy youth swarmed his vehicle demanding for money.

He said he did not have the money and that’s when the rowdy group started beating him, accusing him of staying in Parliament longer than he’s welcome.

Our efforts to talk to the MP failed as his known telephone numbers were switched off by the time of filing this report.

The regionalpolice spokesperson, James Mubi, said the MP had not filed a report with police.

“We (police) have not received any formal complaint or report from the MP. I cannot start speculating what’s on social media. When he files a report, I will give you the deatails,” Mubi said.

The acting Director of Communications at Parliament, Ms Hellen Kaweesa also said she was not aware of the attack.

“Oh! Sorry! I have not been briefed yet. I’m just hearing it from you. Let me first ask my team and see if they have something,” she said.

Katuntu who joined Parliament on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party ticket in 2001 is seeking to retain his seat in the coming election.

He served as the Shadow Attorney General in the Parliament until 2018 when he was replaced by MP Wilfred Niwagaba.
