Ugandan comedian Kapere Lufotose (real name Yokana Mbuuse) has passed away at a hospital in Buddo, Uganda.

Rejected by his family because of his physical appearance and hearing impairment, Yokana Mbuuse, popularly known as Kapere or Kapere Lufotose, turned what made him an outcast into the identity that made him famous.

A former member of Amarula Family comedy group, he grew up under his grandparents in Nansana after losing his mother while still a baby. His father reportedly rejected him and threatened him, leaving his grandparents to raise him.

Before comedy, he hustled making and selling keyholders. His unusual appearance, distinctive voice and exaggerated stage acts later became his trademark.

In a 2013 interview at about 27 years, he described himself as “ugly and proud of it,” saying his looks made him popular.

He rose with Amarula Family alongside Amooti, helping popularise Luganda comedy in bars and clubs. But later he complained of few gigs, poor pay and marginalisation, blasting Alex Muhangi and Comedy Store. He even blamed witchcraft by fellow comedians and warned those who ignored him to skip his funeral.

Off stage, he was married to Lydia Nakinda aka Mama Trump, with at least three children, and built a house for her in Kiyunga, Mukono. He became born-again under Pastor Robert Kayanja.

In 2025, he picked NUP forms to contest as councillor in Makindye, but struggled to write his name in the registration book. He was close to Bobi Wine, who he said promised to help him travel to the US.

Sadly, Kapere died on Sunday, November 1, 2026 at a hospital in Buddo, Wakiso District after a sudden severe headache.
