According to the recent annual crime report by Uganda Police, Ntungamo is one of the most crime rated districts in Uganda. It was ranked fourth with the highest crime rate after Lira, Mbarara and Arua.

One of the committed crimes in the region is rape to women something that is still puzzling the police in charge of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) in the District. They recently expressed concern over the increasing rape and defilement cases in the district revealing that they at least have one case per day and 30 monthly related to rape.

This was revealed by the Assistant inspector of Police Julius Twesiime who is in charge of SGBV at Ntungamo police station.

However, he made a shocking revelation that indecent dressing could be one of the greatest cause of this high rape cases, pointing out that some women do not want to wear knickers yet it is one of the preventive mechanisms.

“There has been a tendency by several women in rural areas who say they do not put on knickers during the day due to hot weather,” Twesiime He said.

Ntungamo recorded 4,731 criminal cases in 2018 and in 2017, the district was ranked second after Lira District in highest crime rates.
