National Basketball League
KCCA Leopards 74-64 Lady Canons

KCCA Leopards took prime position in this year’s ladies National Basketball League (NBL) finals after outwitting defending champions UCU Lady canons in game 5 played at the YMCA outdoor court on Sunday.

After going down 2-0 in the opening two games, KCCA Leopards seemed like they were destined for a sweep but the four time champions put up incredible performances in the last three games to lead the series 3-2.

Namuwaya Muhaimana orchestrated the damage in game five as KCCA Leopards won 74-64 shipping in a game high 27 points and 11 rebounds.

Unlike the first games where KCCA always struggled in the opening quarter, this time round Timothy Odeke’s charges started with a spark with Muhaimana scoring nine points in the first quarter as the leopards went ahead to win 24-12.

Despite Lady Canons marching KCCA in the second period, the latter managed 13 points while the university side had 12 and KCCA went into the break with a 13 point cushion leading 37-24.

The gap had grown too big that even when UCU attempted a comeback in after recess it was too little too late.

Nicholas Natuhereza’s side scored 19 points in the third quarter with KCCA managing just 14 and the gap had narrowed to just 8 points.

The leopards capped off the night adding 23 points in the final period to eventually win the game 74-64 and take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Muhaimana Namuwaya had a game high 27 points while teammate Flavia Oketcho followed closely with 25 for KCCA.

Judith Nansobya led the scores for UCU Lady canons with a team high 15 points.

KCCA Leopards now need to win one of the remaining two games to be crowned 2016 champions.
