Give Besigye his freedom - DP

The Democratic Party has condemned the Police actions of denying former presidential candidate Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye supporters opportunity to welcome him at Entebbe International Airport.

Besigye was returning from abroad where he has spent over a month. On his arrival on Monday morning, he was reportedly picked by the Police and driven to his home in Kasangati, Wakiso district, where he later addressed journalists.

Addressing a press conference at City House in Kampala Tuesday morning, Kenneth Paul Kakande, the DP spokesperson, said Besigye should be treated like other Ugandans. “Our security forces must not be partisan. They should stop such acts,” said Kakande. He said Besigye should have been allowed to meet his supporters who were waiting for him at the airport and FDC offices in Najjanankumbi, on Kampala- Entebbe highway.

Kakande said, as the country prepares to celebrate the 54th Independence Day celebrations, the kind of independence Uganda has is not what the fore fathers fought for.

“People have fled the country to work as slaves in foreign countries because of unfavourable conditions in Uganda,” said Kakande.

He also says that over six million Ugandans cannot afford two meals a day, saying that independence should come along with socio-economic transformation of citizens.
