“We still have unfinished business with Zambia. They defeated us in the U17 two years ago and therefore this is a perfect time for us to revenge,” said Muhammad Shaban when the draws pitted Uganda against Zambia in the U20 COSAFA Cup.
Shaban lived the talk as the Uganda Hippos stunned hosts and favorites Zambia in the opener of the 2017 COSAFA U20 tournament.
A second half brace from the KCCA FC lethal forward who is also the skipper was enough to sink the young Chipolopolo in the game played at Arthur Davis stadium, Kitwe on Wednesday.
Zambia started the better side but Saidi Keni’s presence in goal was able to deny them taking the lead making several saves.
The hosts came close to the opener when skipper Prince Mumba saw his shot ricochet back off the woodwork, before Lameck Banda was denied by a fine stop from Uganda keeper Keni Saidi.
There was an early injury scare for the Hippos with Pius Obuya limping off and his place was taken by Allan Okello midway the opening 45 minutes.
At the start of the second stanza, Matia Lule the Hippos coach introduced creative gem Shafik Kagimu for Frank “Zaga” Tumwesigye.
Six minutes into the second half, Shaban netted from a tight angle after turning home Steven Mukwala’s cross to silence the home crowd.
The lethal striker doubled the lead three minutes later as Uganda cruised to a perfect start.
In the other games played on the day, Malawi edged past Swaziland 3-2 while Egypt nicked a 1-0 victory against Mozambique.
