THIS WEEK: Tortured Kamwenge mayor released on bond

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Tortured Kamwenge mayor Godfrey Byamukama was last week released on police bond. Byamukama who was arrested at the Land Ministry offices in Kampala was suspected to have been involved in the murder of Assistant Inspector General of Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

Byamukama’s case who has since April been detained at a police facility in Nalufenya Jinja district came to the limelight when photos of him being treated at Nakasero hospital for severe injuries on the legs allegedly inflicted on him by security operatives were leaked to the media.

Speaking to journalists at his home on Sept.09, Byamukama said he had been ordered to be reporting at Kira Police Station every week. He also said the day Kaweesi died he was in Kamwenge and even held a council meeting.

However, Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye said Byamukama is still being invetigated over the murder.

Earlier, four police officers – Ben Odeke, Habib Roma, Patrick Muramira and Fred Tumuhairwe  accused of torturing the mayor had also been arrested and  charged with misconduct.
