Breaking news in Uganda and around the world

Dr Runumi Finally Sworn in as ICOB Chairperson

Dr. Francis Mwesigye Runumi, the Former Commissioner in Ministry of Health on Friday made U-turn and was sworn in as the incoming Chairman of the Uganda Chapter of the International Community of Banyakigezi (ICOB – U).

Leaders of the ICOB-U on Friday finally resolved the misunderstandings that previously hindered the smooth running of the association.

The paralysis had followed the Annual General Meeting of the association that took place at White Horse Inn, Kabale, in December 2016, during which new office bearers were elected, including Dr. Runumi as chairman.

Some members of the association claimed that there were mistakes in the conducting of the elections and petitioned the Board, delaying the handover to the newly elected executive, headed by Dr Francis Runumi.

The old team led by Dr Peter Ngategize refused to hand over instruments of power to the Runumi team.

Tension escalated a few weeks ago, when the new Chair, Dr Runumi and some seven members of his executive, resigned including Fidelis Kanyamunyu (Kisoro Representative), Benjamin Akababyeyi (Youth Representative), Berna Namanya (Treasurer,) among others.

This threatened discomfort in the association — an envy of many –, which brings together descendants of the Greater Kigezi Districts of Kabale, Kanungu, Kisoro, Rubanda and Rukungiri, as well as those in the Diaspora.

After a series of meetings convened by Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, himself a founding member of ICOB and Bank of Uganda Governor Prof Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the Chapter Patron; the elders and members of the ICOB board, as well as members of the incoming executive led Dr Francis Runumi and the outgoing executive led by Dr Peter Ngategize, came to a common understanding to keep true to the overarching objective of ICOB–keeping Banyakigezi united.

Following the meetings, Dr Runumi and his executive agreed to continue in the leadership of the association and the Board agreed to oversee the handover which took place on Friday with the handover ceremony from the old to the new executive held at Imperial Royale in Kampala.

The Patron Prof Mutebile called on the new executive to build on the achievements of the outgoing team and keep the association and members United.

Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda Speaking at the handover ceremony thanked the leaders for rejecting divisionism and upholding unity.
