MUK Student Given Light To Manufacture Bombs & Teargas

By Serestino Tusingwire

The Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Jeje Odongo has Okayed Makerere University’s Samuel Mugarura to continue with his innovations of making teargas and bombs.

Mugarura, a third year student of Bachelor of Science in Botany, last month showcased teargas which he said was made from local ingredients and promised to make bombs if given government support.

While addressing the media at Naguru Police headquarters on Monday, Minister Odongo said he welcomes innovations made; especially by Ugandans as long as those innovations are harnessed.

“Innovations in science are very welcome especially if they are made by Ugandans. I welcome such ventures. What is important is for us to harness them such that they do not fall into the hands of bad people” Odongo said.

He said it would be interesting to have an interaction with those individuals and see how the innovations are going to be helpful to the society and country at large.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima had earlier said Mugarura’s project is a security threat to the country and to him as an individual and warned him to stop his innovations or he risks being imprisoned.

“He should follow the standard procedure and should not do things that might compromise his security and national security,”Kayima said.
