Bank Of Uganda Hires New Lawyers For Sudhir Case

Bank of Uganda has retained the services of new lawyers in the commercial court case they filed agains the former richest man in Uganda, Sudhir Ruparelia.

Sources say BoU had signed Sebalu Lule & Co. Advocates and thus will not be having David Mpanga of AF Mpanga Advocates and Timothy Masembe of MMAKS Advocates as lead lawyers in the case against the former boss of Crane Bank.

It is not clear what role Mpanga and MMAKS will not play in the case agains Sudhir.

Bank of Uganda acquired the services of Mpanga and MMAKS to file a Shs400bn suit against Ruparelia accusing him and Meera Investments Ltd of criminally siphoning money from Crane Bank and contributing to its collapse.

When the details of the case were revealed to the public, Sudhir fired back and filed a counter claim against BoU. Sudhir also cast doubt on the fairness of the BoU lawyers saying they had a conflict of interest because they had represented many of his companies over the years and might be called upon to testify as witnesses in the 400bn case.

The Lawyers had defended themselves saying they had represented Sudhir’s companies but not Sudhir the person and that there is a difference between the person whom Bank of Uganda is suing and the companies that had hired the lawyers over the years.
The conflict of interest case is yet to be heard but it looks like BoU has now put the case clear by dropping the two law firms from the case and hired a completely independent firm in Sebalu Lule and Company Advocates.
At a mediation hearing yesterday before Justice Yorokamu Bamwine MMAKS Advocates and AF Mpanga Advocates had no representation.

BoU was represented by Director Supervision Justine Bagyenda and Sudhir was in court and was represented by Peter Kabatsi of Kampala Associated Advocates.
